Integrated Management of Banana Diseases (2016 - 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to assess the performance of different chemical fungicides and nonchemical agents for the management of sigatoka and panama disease of banana during January to December 2016 at two locations of BARI research field and RARS, Ishurdi. Among the organic soil amendments and biocontrol agent, Trichoderma perform best in both disease management and yield parameters at two locations. For the chemical management of sigatoka disease of banana six different groups of fungicides have been used with control. Among the chemicals Tilt 250 EC, Nativo 75 WG and Knowing 50 WP perform best in both cases at two locations.

Objectives:

To find out the effective management practides of banana diseases Sigatoka and Panama .

Methodology:

In February 2016 the experiment has been set up at two locations viz. the Plant Pathology research field of BARI, Gazipur and RARS, Ishardi, Pabna to screen the chemicals fungicides for the management of panama and sigatoka diseases of banana, and also to screen the organic soil amendments and bio-control agents especially Trichoderma for management of panama disease of banana. Panama susceptible variety named Shabri was planted for the integrated management of panama disease of banana. In this experiment, 7 treatments have been used with 5 replications in Gazipur location. Each plant considered as one replication. On the other hand, 7 treatments have been used with 3 replications in Ishurdi, Pabna field. Each replication represents four plants. The Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was followed. The seven treatments were:

T₁= Application of poultry refuse @ 5 ton/ha

T₂= Application of mustard oil cake @ 600 kg/ha

T₃= Application of sesame oil cake @ 600 kg/ha

T₄= Application of neem oil cake @ 300 kg/ha

T₅= Application of Trichoderma @ 3 ton/ha

T₆= Sucker treatment with Bavistin 0.2%

T₇= Control

Poultry refuse, neem oil cake, mustard oil cake, and sesame oil cake were applied three weeks before the planting to incorporated with the soil properly for good decomposition. Trichoderma was applied one week before planting into the soil. Sucker treatment with Bavistin had been done just before the planting. Irrigation and other cultural management have been done properly as and when necessary. Data on disease incidence was recorded four times after emerging the disease at both Gazipur and Ishurdi. At both regions, spraying of Tilt 250 EC showed the lowest PDI and highest yield followed by Nativo 75 WG and Knowing 59 WP while the highest PDI and lowest yield were obtained from the control treatment (no fungicide)

Achievement/Findings:

From the experiment, it may be concluded that Trichoderma and neem oil cake among organic soil amendments are most effective for Panama disease management, and Tilt 250 EC, Nativo 75 WG, and Knowing 50 WP are most effective for Sigatoka disease management.
