An experiment having five treatments viz., 1. Liming before T. aman rice plantation, 2. Liming 30 days before potato plantation, 3. Liming 20 days before potato plantation, 4. Liming 10 days before potato plantation, 5. No liming or control was conducted at farmer's field, Domar, Nilphamari to know the effect of liming on the development of common scab and yield of potato and also to find out suitable timing for effective use of lime. The year of study was 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 cropping years and popular but susceptible "Diamant" potato variety was used. The use of lime significantly influenced common scab and slightly increased potato yield. The trend of disease incidence and severity was decreasing as the gap between liming and time of potato planting is increasing. The significantly highest disease incidence (45.98% and 62.09%) and severity (16.82 and 22.75) was recorded from liming 10 days before potato plantation treatment in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 cropping year, respectively. The highest tuber yield like 36.97 t ha-1 (2015-2016 cropping year) and 31.15 t ha-1 (2016-2017 cropping year) was harvested from liming before rice cultivation treatment and the lowest 33.21 t ha-1 and 28.12 t ha-1 in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, respectively, was from without liming treatment.

To know the effect of liming on the development of common scab and yield of potato and also to find out suitable timing for effective use of lime for successful potato production.

The experiment was conducted in known common scab disease of potato infested farmers’ field, Khaturia, Domar, Nilphamari during 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. Before going to set the experiment, the soil pH of the experimental plot was tested with the help of SRDI, Dinajpur and after harvesting of potato, soil samples were also tested from the same organization. The experiment was laid out following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications with blocks having a block to block distance of 1.5 m and plot to plot distance 1.0 m within a block. To protect water movement from one plot to another plot separate border lines ensured in between two blocks even in between two plots within a block. Unit plot size was 4.20 m x 4.0 m. The treatments were, 1) Liming before T. aman rice plantation, 2) Liming 30 days before potato plantation, 3) Liming 20 days before potato plantation, 4) Liming 10 days before potato plantation and 5) No liming as control. The dose of dolochun lime (CaCO3MgCO3) was 1.0 t ha-1. For the treatment -liming before T. aman rice plantation, after liming rice was grown following appropriate method. After harvesting of rice land was prepared separately considering treatments. Potato seeds were planted having a distance of 60 cm x 25 cm. The variety was "Diamant" and the date of planting was November 15, 2015, and November 21, 2016. The recommended fertilizer dose developed by Tuber Crops Research Center (TCRC), BARI was followed; where, Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum, Magnesium sulphate, Zinc sulphate and Annapurna jaibo sar was 350-225-275-120-100-10-1000 kg ha-1 Agronomic practices were done properly. To manage cutworm insects, granular systemic insecticide (Furadan 5G @ 15 kg ha-1) was incorporated in the soil of seed furrows just before planting seed tubers. Dithane M-45 @ 2g/L water was applied as foliar spray two times at an interval of 10-12 days, starting from 20 days old plant for managing late blight (LB) disease. Again, Acrobat MZ @ 2 g/L water was sprayed as foliar 3 times against LB at an interval of 10-12 days, starting from the 3rd week of December. Haulm pulling was done ninety DAP and tubers were harvested 10 and 15 days after haulm pulling in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 cropping years respectively. Data on yield (t ha-1), incidence and severity of common scab of potato tubers were recorded following standard procedure. The incidence of scab in terms of percent of scabbed tubers was calculated from the tubers of the middle five lines of each plot. The severity of the disease and Percent Disease Index (PDI) were recorded. The severity was indexed on a scale of 0-5 (Sharma, 1984), where, 0 = No scabbed area on the surface of potato tuber, 1 = Trace to 10% scabbed area, 2 = > 10-20% scabbed area, 3 = > 20-30% scabbed area,   4 = > 30-50% scabbed area and 5 = above 50 % scabbed area.

Data on different parameters were analyzed following MSTAT-C and means were compared using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Common scab disease incidence and severity decrease as the time gap between the use of lime and potato plantation increases. Liming increases the yield of potato but should be cautious for use of lime in common scab pathogen-prone soil. Liming before rice plantation for potato production is more suitable if liming is needed.
