Effect of Planting Time on the Late Blight Disease of Potato in the Resistant and Susceptible Variety/lines (2016 - 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the rabi season of 2016 – 2017 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur to observe the effect of planting time on late blight disease and yield of potato. There were three planting time and four varieties in this experiment. The planting time was 15 November, 30 November and 15 December. Out of four test varieties, there were three resistant varieties namely BARI Alu-46, BARI Alu-53, Sarpomira and a susceptible variety Diamant. The results indicated that late blight severity was increased with the concomitant decreased of yield due to delayed planting. The resistant variety BARI Alu 46 gave the highest yield with the lowest disease. The highest yield (38.97 t/ha) was obtained from resistant variety BARI alu 46 with lowest disease at 30 November planting.

Objectives:

This experiment has been undertaken to observe the effect of planting time on disease and yield of potato

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during the Rabi season of 2016 - 17. The design of the experiment was split plots with 3 replications. Block to block and plot to plot distance was 1.5 m and 1 m, respectively. Unit plot size was 2m x 1.8m having plant spacing 60 cm x 25 cm. There were 3 planting times and 4 varieties. The planting time was 15 November, 30 November, and 15 December. The varieties were BARI Alu-46, BARI Alu-53, Sarpomira and Diamant. Planting time was in the main plots and varieties were in the subplots. Recommended fertilizer doses were applied and other agronomic practices were done properly. Fungicides were not applied in this experiment. Data on disease severity (% leaf area infected) was recorded at 10 days intervals starting from 30 DAP to 90 DAP. Yield i.e. tuber yield (t/ha) was also recorded from the whole plot.

Achievement/Findings:

Results revealed that in 15 November sowing the disease severity was lower and the yield was higher in case of all the varieties. In 15 December sowing (Late sowing) the disease severity was higher in the same age (50 DAP) than the early sowing in all the varieties. On the other hand in case of yield higher yield was obtained from early sowing than the late sowing. The highest yield was obtained from BARI Alu 46 in the early sowing.
