Yield Loss Assessment of Resistant and Susceptible Variety of Potato Due to Late Blight Disease (2016 - 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The trial was conducted during the rabi season of 2016 – 2017 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur to assess the yield loss of susceptible and resistant varieties of potato due to late blight disease. There were two resistant varieties namely BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53 and a susceptible variety Diamant to determine yield loss. Four spry schedules were maintained in this expt. Four spray schedules of Mancozeb (Dithane M 45@ 0.2% ) were one-time spray; two-time spray; three-time spray and four-time spray. One unsprayed plot was maintained for each variety. Among the varieties, the lower disease was observed in the two resistant varieties than the susceptible variety. From the results, it was observed that in the case of yield the highest yield 67.06 t/ha was obtained from the resistant variety BARI Alu-46. The yield of other resistant varieties (BARI Alu-53) was also higher than the susceptible variety Diamant. The highest yield reduction i.e 51% was obtained in the susceptible variety. The lowest yield reduction 26.45% was obtained in the resistant variety at zero sprays.

Objectives:

The present experiment has been conducted to determine the yield loss of this released resistant variety.

Methodology:

The trial was conducted during the rabi season of 2016 – 2017 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur to determine the yield loss of potato due to late blight in susceptible and resistant varieties of potato. There were two resistant varieties namely BARI Alu-46 and BARI Alu-53 and a susceptible variety Diamant. Four spray schedule of Mancozeb (Dithane M 45@ 0.2%) were one-time spray; two-time spray; three-time spray and four-time spray. One unsprayed plot was also maintained for each variety. The recommended fertilizer dose developed by Tuber Crops Research Center (TCRC), BARI was followed. Well decomposed cow dung and zinc sulphate was spread to the soil before the opening of land. A split application of Urea i.e. ½ of the recommended and full doses of TSP, MoP, Gypsum, Magnesium sulphate and boric acid were applied as row placement besides 5-7 cm of the seed planting rows on both sides. The remaining half of Urea was applied as side application at 30 DAP and followed by earthing up of soil by the spade. Other agronomic practices were done properly. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications with varieties in the main plots and spray schedule in the subplots. The unit plot size was 2m x 1.8m where tubers were planted maintaining 60cm X 25cm spacing between two rows and from tuber to tuber. The seed tubers were planted on 02 December 2016. Spraying was started 30 days after planting. In the case of 2, 3 and 4 spray the spray interval was 10 days. The severity of the disease was estimated by eye estimation considering the whole plot at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 DAP. Haulm pulling was done 95 days after planting and harvesting was completed 10 days after haulm pulling. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into ton/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the study revealed that at 50 DAPS the % leaf area in the faction in the susceptible variety Diamant ranged from 00.10%-60%. In resistant variety, BARI Alu 46 ranged from 0.01%-05.00% and in the resistant variety BARI Alu 53 it ranged from 0.10%-10%. The highest yield of 67.06 ton/ha was obtained from BARI Alu 46 followed by 52.89 ton from BARI Alu 53. In the case of yield loss 26.45%, 37.19% and 51.28% yield loss were observed respectively from BARI Alu 46, BARI Alu 53 and Diamant variety.
