Effect of Different Rates of Mulch Materials and Fertilizers on Soil Salinity and Crop Yield in Coastal Saline Soils of Bangladesh (2018-19)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Straw mulching can improve soil nitrogen availability, increase plant growth and influence the physical and chemical properties of the soil. An experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during rabi season of 2017-2018 to investigate the effect of mulching and different rates of fertilizers on crop yield under saline soil. There were nine treatments viz. T₁ = Recommended Dose of Fertilizer (RDF), T₂ = Rice straw 5 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF, T₃ = Rice straw 5 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF, T₄ = Rice straw 2 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF, T₅ = Rice straw 2 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF, T₆ = Wheat straw 5 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF, T₇ = Wheat straw 5 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF, T₈ = Wheat straw 2 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF and T₉ = Wheat straw 2 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF. Seed yield (1.53 t ha^-1) was recorded highest in T₂but higher levels of BCR was recorded in T₅ (1.80) with higher gross margin (Tk. 30950 ha^-1) due to comparatively less use of rice straw and chemical fertilizer. The lowest level of soil salinity was recorded in sowing time (1.92 dS m^-1) in T₈ and the highest level of salinity (09.68 dS m^-1) was recorded in T₁ at the harvesting stage.

Objectives:

To observe the effects of different rates of mulch and recommended fertilizer on the yield of mustard and soil salinity level in coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Experimental site and design: The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during rabi season of 2017-2018 to investigate effect of mulching and different rates of fertilizers on crop yield under saline soil. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ-13. The land topography was medium low. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture with pH 6.9. There were nine treatments: T₁ = Recommended Dose of Fertilizer (RDF), T₂ = Rice straw 5 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF, T₃ = Rice straw 5 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF, T₄ = Rice straw 2 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF, T₅ = Rice straw 2 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF, T₆ = Wheat straw 5 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF, T₇ = Wheat straw 5 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF, T₈ = Wheat straw 2 t ha^-1 + 100% RDF and T₉ = Wheat straw 2 t ha^-1 + 75% RDF. The crop variety was BARI Mustard-14. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Unit plot size was 3m × 2m. At every 15 days interval soil salinity (dS m^-1) was measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data on yield and yield components were recorded and analyzed using MSTAT-C program. Seed sowing & crop management: As for recommended dose of fertilizer application, the experimental plots were fertilized with 180-110-60-110-5-10-0 kg ha^-1 Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum, ZnSO₄, Boric acid and Cowdung, respectively as per treatments. All the fertilizers were applied as basal except Urea. Seeds were sown in 29 November, 2017 in row to row distance of 30 cm. Three irrigation were applied during the growing period. Weeding was done at 14 days after sowing followed by thinning to keep plant to plant distance of 10 cm. Disease and insect pests were always well controlled using suggested applies (BARI, 2014). The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

In the coastal areas of Bangladesh, rice straw 5 t/ha along with 100% RDF may increase the mustard yield but use of rice straw 2 t ha^-1 along with 75% RDF is also an economically benefitted way of mustard production. This is the 2^nd year of experiment. It should be trailed next 3 years for final recommendation.
