Phosphorus deficiency is a well-known nutrient constraint on salt-affected soils. An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-2018 to observe the effects of residual phosphorus on subsequent crop yield and find out the best dose of phosphorus in mungbean production in saline soil. There were five treatments viz. In case of mustard; T1 stand for Recommended Dose of  Fertilizer (RDF) except Phosphorus (P), T2 stand for RDF and 100% P, T3 stand for RDF and 25% P , T4 stand for RDF and 50% P  and T5 stand for RDF and 75% P. In case of mungbean field, RDF except P was applied in all treatments. The crop varieties were BARI Mustard-14 and BARI Mug-6. The highest seed yield (1.43 t ha-1) of mustard was obtained from T2 (RDF and 100% P) treatment while the lowest seed yield obtained from phosphorus untreated plot. In case of mungbean, T2 (100% residual P from previous application) provided maximum seed yield (1.06 t ha-1) that was statistically similar with T4 (50% residual P from previous application) and T5 (75% residual P from previous application) treatment whereas the minimum seed yield (0.74 t ha-1) recorded in T1 (no residual P) treatment.

To observe the effects of residual phosphorus on subsequent crop yield.

 

Experimental site and design: The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-2018 to observe the effects of residual phosphorus on subsequent crop yield and find out the best dose of phosphorus in pulse production in saline soil. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ-13. The land topography was medium low. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture with pH 6.78. There were five treatments viz. In case of mustard, T1 stand for Recommended Dose of  Fertilizer (RDF) except Phosphorus (P), T2 stand for RDF and 100% P, T3 stand for RDF and 25% P , T4 stand for RDF and 50% P  and T5 stand for RDF and 75% P. In case of mungbean field, RDF except P was applied in all treatments. The crop varieties were BARI Mustard-14 and BARI Mug-6. The experiment was laid in RCB design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4m × 4.1m. Data on yield and yield components of mustard and mungbean were recorded and analysed statistically using MSTAT-C program. Field measurement of soil salinity: Soil salinity at different dates was recorded at 09:00-10:30 a.m. every 15 days interval, starting from sowing until harvest. The salinity was measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data were taken at the middle of the plot. Collected data were analysed using ANOVA procedure. Once a week, a calibration for the meter was made by comparing with laboratory data. Seed sowing and crop management: The RDF assigned experimental plots were fertilized with 250-85-150-5-10 kg ha-1 Urea, MoP, Gypsum, Zinc Sulphate and Boric Acid respectively. Half of N and all other fertilizers were applied as basal and remaining N was top dressed at pre- flowering stage (20-22 DAE). Due to unexpected rainfall, seeds of mustard were sown on 27 December, 2017 following row to row distance of 30 cm whereas seeds of mungbean were sown on 12 March, 2017.  Three irrigations were applied during the growing period. Weeding was done at 14 days after sowing followed by thinning to keep plant to plant distance of 10 cm. Disease and insect pests were always well controlled using suggested applies (BARI, 2014). The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

It is concluded that phosphorus application can affect the growth, yield and plant   characters of mustard. The supplemental phosphorus is important macro-nutrient to control  phosphorus deficiency in high and medium  lands  in  coastal saline  region. The seed yield of mustard (cv. BARI Sarisha-14) increased markedly due to phosphorus application into the soil at the rules recommended dose of other fertilizers along with 100% Phosphorous. And Residual P can increase yields of succeeding crop especially mungbean (BARI Mug-6). This is the 1st year of experiment. It should be trailed next 3 years for final recommendation.
