An experiment was conducted at BARI Central Research Farm, Joydebpur and RARS, Ishurdi during rabi season in 2016-2017 to evaluate the effects of tillage and nitrogen fertilizer on soil Physico-chemical properties and crop yields and to assess the system productivity in the Mustard- Boro- T. Aman cropping system. Two tillage practices such as T1: strip-tillage (ST) and T2: conventional tillage (CT) was assigned in the main plot and three levels of N fertilizer such as N1: 75% of recommended N-fertilizer dose (RND), N2: 100% of recommended N-fertilizer dose (RND) and N3: 125% of recommended N-fertilizer dose (RND) was allotted in sub-plot in a split-plot design with three replications. The tested mustard crop was sown on 15th & 20th November of 2016 and harvested on 13th & 16th February of 2017 at Joydebpur and Ishurdi, respectively. The highest weed infestation was recorded in ST with 125% N-fertilizer applied plots (143 g m-2 at Joydebpur and 261 g m-2 at Ishurdi) and CT with 75% N-fertilizer applied plots produced minimum weed (70 g  m-2 at Joydebpur and 123 g m-2 at Ishurdi). Tillage practices had significant effects on a number of siliqua plant-1, but no variations were found in other parameters at Joydebpur whereas at Ishurdi, significantly higher plant population m-2 was found in CT practice (83.6 nos. m-2) and fewer plants m-2 were recorded in CT practice (42.2 nos. m-2) but a higher number of siliqua plant-1 (69.7) was recorded in ST practice than CT practice (57.6). Tillage practices had significant differences on grain yield of mustard at RARS, Ishurdi but not at Joydebpur and higher grain (1.38 t ha-1) was found in CT and the lower grain (1.11 t ha-1) was recorded in ST practice at Ishurdi. On the other hand, different N fertilizer levels showed significant variations in the number of branches plant-1 at Joydebpur and the highest number of branches plant-1 was found in N3 level and the lowest number of branches plant-1 was obtained in N1. Different N-levels showed significant differences in seed yield of mustard at Joydebpur and the highest seed (1.43 t ha-1) was obtained in N3 treatment, followed by N2 treatment (1.25 t ha-1) and the lowest seed (0.99 t ha-1) was obtained in N1 treatment. In the case of RARS, Ishurdi, different N fertilizer levels showed significant variations in plant height and the significantly tallest plants were observed in N3 level (88.4 cm) and the shortest plants were obtained in N1 level (81.5 cm). N-levels had significant differences in straw yield of mustard at Joydebpur and Ishurdi regardless of tillage practices. The highest straw yield of (1.40 t ha-1 at Joydebpur and 1.28 t ha-1 at Ishurdi) was observed in 125% of RND and the lowest straw yield (1.29 t ha-1 at Joydebpur and 1.16 t ha-1 at Ishurdi) was observed in 75% of RND. Root weight of dry matter was significantly influenced by different N levels and the highest root mass (2.10 & 2.24 g plant-1) was observed in N3 treatment and the lowest root mass (1.39 & 1.53 g plant-1) was observed in N1 treatment at Joydebpur and Ishurdi, respectively.

The present study was carried out to fulfill the following objectives: i). To determine the optimum rate of nitrogen fertilizer for the intensive Mustard- Boro- T. Aman cropping system under conservation agriculture practice; ii). To evaluate the effects of tillage and nitrogen fertilizer on soil and crop yields in the rice–based cropping system; and iii). To assess the system productivity in the intensive rice-based cropping system.

The experiment was started at BARI Central Research Farm, Joydebpur and RARS, Ishurdi during rabi season in 2016-2017. The study area was under the agro-ecological zone “Madhupur Tract” (AEZ-28) and “High Ganges River Floodplain” (AEZ-11). Initial soil properties of the experimental field were determined and information of soil texture, bulk density, soil moisture content, soil pH, soil organic matter, total N, exchangeable K, available P, S, Zn, and B contents at 0-15 cm soil depths. The unit experimental plot area was 7.2 m × 3.5 m at Joydebpur and 7.2 × 4.0 m at RARS, Ishurdi and the design of the experiment was split-plot with four replications. Two tillage practices such as T1: strip-tillage (ST) and T2: conventional tillage (CT) were assigned in the main plot and three levels of N fertilizer, such as N1: 75% of recommended N-fertilizer dose (RND), N2: 100% of recommended N-fertilizer dose (RND) and N3: 125% of recommended N-fertilizer dose (RND) were allotted in sub-plot in a split-plot design with three replications. At the initiation of the experiment, the plots were separated from each other according to the layout. Strip tillage was done by a power tiller-operated seeder (PTOS) with one pass whereas conventional tillage was by power tiller with two passes followed by two ladderings. The mustard seed was sown on 15th and 20th November 2016 at Joydebpur and Ishurdi, respectively at 30 cm apart from rows continuously. The rates of chemical fertilizers were N102P22K54S10Zn1B0.5 at Joydebpur and N131P21K64S19Zn3B1 at RARS, Ishurdi according to STB followed by FRG-2012. The whole amount of the fertilizers with half amount urea of respective N-levels was applied as basal dose whereas the rest half amount of urea was applied at 25 days after sowing (DAS). After that hand weeding (just uprooting the weeds by hand, therefore, no soil pulverization occurred in ST practice) was done once only at 24th DAS. The crop, mustard was harvested on 13 February 2017 at Joydebpur and 16 February 2017 at Ishurdi. One m2 area from each plot was selected for data collection. Ten plants of each plot were selected for a number of plant population m-2, plant height, number of branches plant-1, number of siliqua plant-1, siliqua length and number of seeds siliqua-1. Thousand seed weights were measured plot-wise. The plants were cut, then threshed, cleaned, sun-dried and weighed of grain and straw separately from the 1.0 m2 area of each plot. Finally, the grain and straw were converted into t ha-1. All the crop data and soil properties at selected depths were statistically analyzed using a split-plot design. Treatment effects on measured variables were tested by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and comparisons among treatment means were made using the least significant difference LSD) multiple range test calculated at 5% level of probability (P £0.05). Statistical procedures were carried out with the software program “Statistics for Windows (1998).

ST with 125% N-fertilizer application was highly infested by weeds whereas the plots under CT with 75% N-fertilizer application showed minimum infestation. Tillage practices had significant effects on a number of siliqua plant-1, but no variations were found in other parameters at Joydebpur whereas, at Ishurdi, a significantly higher plant population m-2 was found in CT. Tillage practices had significant differences in the grain yield of mustard at RARS, Ishurdi but not at Joydebpur. Different N-levels showed significant differences in seed yield of mustard at Joydebpur and the highest seed (1.43 t ha-1) was obtained in N3 treatment, followed by N2 treatment and the lowest seed was obtained in N1 treatment. The root weight of mustard was significantly influenced by different N levels and the highest root mass was observed in N3 treatment and the lowest root mass was observed in N1 treatment. However, the study should be conducted long-term basis to explore the real benefits of minimum tillage practices together with proper N fertilizer dose for maximizing the crop yield as well as cropping system productivity and sustaining the soil health in the studied regions.
