The field experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Rahmatpur, Barisal and Hathazari, Chittagong during the Rabi season of 2016-17 to find out the suitable genotype(s) of cowpea for better adaptation as well as higher yield in the southern region of Bangladesh. Six entries of cowpea viz., E1 = CPS-6, E2 = CPS-12, E3 = CPS-13, E4 = CPS-14, E5 = CPS-15, and E6 = BARI Felon-1 (check variety) were tested in this experiment. Statistically significant differences were observed among the entries in terms of days to flowering, pod length, 100-seed weight and seed yield at Rahmatpur. Days to flowering were the highest (56.00 days) in CPS-6 followed by BARI Felon-1 (53.67 days). At Rahmatpur the longest pod (30.25 cm) was found in CPS-15 but CPS-6 gave the shortest pod (18.19 cm). BARI Felon-1 produced the highest weight of 100-seed (11.42 g) which was statistically identical to that of CPS-12 (11.29 g). At Rahmatpurthe highest yield of seed (1459 kg/ha) was achieved from BARI Felon-1 followed by CPS-12 (1092 kg/ha) and CPS-13 (1026 kg/ha). But in case of Hathazari maturity duration among the tested entries ranged from 119-138 days and the highest yield 1292.67 kg/ha was produced by CPS-6 followed by 1101.33 kg/ha in CPS-15. The entry CPS-6  produced 32.87% and CPS-15 produced  13.2%  more yield than check varieties BARI Felon-1 (972.90 kg/ha).CPS-14 produced the lowest yield of 722.45 kg/ha at Hathazari.

The field evaluation and adaptation of cowpea genotypes were undertaken to find out suitable genotype/entry(ies) of cowpea under the ago-climatic conditions of the southern region of Bangladesh.

The field evaluation of cowpea was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Rahmatpur, Barisal and Hathazari, Chittagong during the Rabi season of 2016-17 for selection of line(s) for specific/wide adaptation in southern and Chittagong region of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Six entries of cowpea viz., E1 = CPS-6, E2 = CPS-12, E3 = CPS-13, E4 = CPS-14, E5 = CPS-15, and E6 = BARI Felon-1 (check variety) were tested in this experiment. The unit plot size was 6 rows 2 meters long. Seeds were sown with spacing 60 cm from row to row distance and seed to seed 15 cm distance. Seeds were sown on 28 December 2016 at Rahmatput, Barisal and 27 December 2016 at Hathazari, Chittagong. Fertilizers were applied after final land preparation at the rate of 15-15-6-2 kg/ha N-P-K-S, respectively in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively (FRG, 2012). Different agronomic practices were done following the recommended production technologies as suggested by cowpea (BARI, 2014). The crop was harvested at the physiological maturity stage. The crop was harvested treatment wise ranging from 5 April to 22 April 2017. Data were recorded on a different parameter in terms of days to flower, days to maturity, plant height, number of pod/plant, pod length, number of seed/pod, 100-seed weight and seed yield. Data were analyzed statistically and means were separated by Least Significance Difference (LSD) test following the guidelines as suggested by Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Statistically significant differences were observed among the entries in relation to days to flowering, pod length, 100-seed weight and seed yield. Days to flowering became the highest (56.00 days) in CPS-6 followed by BARI Felon-1 (53.67 days). The longest pod (30.25 cm) was obtained from CPS-15, which statistically at par with that of CPS-12 (28.93 cm) but CPS-6 gave the shortest pod (18.19 cm). BARI Felon-1 produced the highest weight of 100-seed (11.42 g) and the value was statistically similar to that of CPS-12 (11.29 g). Similarly, the highest yield of seed (1459 kg/ha) was obtained from BARI Felon-1 followed by CPS-12 (1092 kg/ha) and CPS-13 (1026 kg/ha). From the last three years mean yield performance showed that CPS-13 performed better. Branch /plant, days to maturity of the cowpea genotypes were statistically similar (Table 2.30).CPS-15 was the tallest plant (47.60 cm) whereas CPS-6 was the shortest (42.35 cm).CPS-6 produced maximum no of branch/plant (3.22) and CPS-15 produced minimum no of branch /plant(2.22). The lowest field duration was BARI Felon-1, 127 days and the highest maturity duration was 138 days by CPS-15. Root dry weight (g), Shoot dry weight (g) and total dry weight (g) were highest in CPS-14 (Table 2.30).

Yield and yield contributing characters

Yield and yield contributing characters are presented in the Table 2.31. No. of pods/plant, No. of seeds/pod were statistically similar for all the cowpea genotypes. The highest no. of pods/plant 10.44 produced by CPS-6 and lowest 6.76 by CPS-14. Highest no. of seeds/ pod 6.63 produced by CPS-6 and lowest 5.24 by CPS-14. The highest 1000 seed weight (g) is produced by CPS-6 (114.38 g) and lowest by BARI Felon-1 (90.02 g). CPS-6 produced the highest seed yield per hectare (1292.67 kg) followed by CPS-15 (1101.33 kg). CPS-14 produced lowest seed yield of 722.45 kg/ha (Table 2.31).

Considering the research findings, the cowpea entries CPS-12 and CPS-13 were promising although BARI Felon-1 gave the highest yield at Barisal but at Chittagong CPS-6, CPS-15 and CPS-12 performed better.  However, the experiment should be repeated in the next year’s Rabi season for further confirmation in this regard.
