Effect of Tillage Methods and Compost Based Ipns Package on the Productivity of Radish-pea-okra-t. Aman Rice Cropping Pattern and Sustainability of Soil Health

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field trials were conducted at Central Research Farm at Gazipur (AEZ-28) and at RARS, Jessore (AEZ-11) during rabi 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. The objectives were to find out the suitable dose of compost and chemical fertilizers for maximizing the yield of Radish-Pea-Okra-T. aman rice pattern and to know the effect of tillage methods and compost based IPNS package on the improvement of soil health. There were three tillage methods, such as T₁= Minimum tillage, T₂= Conventional tillage and T₃= Deep tillage: and four nutrient management practices viz. NM₁= 100% STB as per FRG, 2012 all from chemical fertilizer, NM₂= 125% STB all from chemical fertilizer NM₃: NM₁(75% from chemical fertilizer + 25% from compost) NM₄: Native fertility. The experiment was set up in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design with 12 treatments and 3 replications. The highest root yield (23.5 and 20.0 t ha^-1) of radish and pod of garden pea (1.86 and 4.54 t ha^-1) was recorded from deep tillage, which was significantly higher over conventional tillage and minimum tillage (4-6 cm depth). The next 2 crops of the pattern okra and T. aman rice did not responded significantly to tillage depth. For the second cycle the effect of tillage found to be statistically non-significant. All 4 crops of the pattern responded significantly to nutrient management packages where the highest yield was recorded either from 125% STB dose or NM₃ (IPNS based dose) for the first year. The the performance of IM₃ was much pronounced in the second year. It was found that 25% increased fertilizer dose over present recommendations (FRG, 2012) is required for maximizing the yield. But IPNS approach formulated preferably with conventional compost having 75: 25 inorganic: organic ratio may save the requirement of 25% chemical fertilizer without yield reduction. Deep tillage produced higher yield, which was almost similar with conventional tillage when it combined with compost formulated IPNS package. The rice equivalent yield (REY) of the studied 4 crop based cropping pattern varied from 17.93 to 46.94 t ha^-1 at Joydebpur and 27.54 to 52.87 t ha^-1 at Jessore where the highest REY was observed from T₃ × M₂ which was closely followed by T₃ × M₃. The REY for the second year was found highest (49.61 t ha^-1) for T₃× M₃ at Joydebpur while at Jessore the REY was almost same (52.87~ 52.62 t ha^-1) for T₃× M₂and T₃× M₃. For the third cycle, the highest REY (42 t ha^-1) was also recorded from T₃M₃, which was almost same (41~ 42 t ha^-1) to T₂M₃signified that addition of compost for the consecutive three years (12 crops) resulted in minimization of yield gap between deeper tillage with reduced tillage. The yield benefit for the third cycle found to be 20% for T₃M₃ and 19% for T₂M₃at Joydebpur while such benefit was little lower at Jessore. Gross return and gross margin was highest for the treatment T₃M₃followed by T₃M₂and T₂M₃. However, the highest BCR (1.40) was obtained from T₁M₃followed by T₂M₃and T₃M₃. The IPNS package along with reduced tillage may be helpful in achieving the higher economic benefit. Nitrogen balance was found to be negative while K was apparently balanced. The balanced of P, S Zn and B found to be positive irrespective of treatments. Thus depletion of K could be minimized with reduced tillage and IPNS approach of fertilizer management.

Objectives:

i) To find out the suitable dose of compost and chemical fertilizers for maximizing the yield of the pattern (ii) To know the effect tillage methods and compost based IPNS package on the improvement of soil health.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Central Research Farm, Gazipur (AEZ-28) and Regional Agricultural Research Station’s farm (AEZ-11), Jessore during the rabi (winter) season, 2014-2015. The second cycle of the said pattern was completed during 2015-2016 and to be reported this year (2016-2017). The third cycle are in progress with 11th crop okra is in the field till the preparation of present report. The treatments comprised of three different tillage options viz., (i) Minimum tillage (MT) and (ii) Conventional tillage (CT) and (iii) Deep tillage (DT) in combination with four types of nutrient management package viz., NM₁= 100% STB based on (FRG, 2012) all from chemical fertilizer, NM₂ = 125% STB (FRG, 2012) all from chemical fertilizer, NM₃= NM₁(75% from chemical fertilizer + 25% from compost) NM₄= Native fertility. The plot size was 4m x 3m. The experiment was set up in a 2 factor Randomized Completely Block Design with 3 replications. The physical and chemical properties of initial soil for Gazipur and Jessore are presented. The 100% STB dose for Radish and pea at Jessore was N₁₆₀P₃₀K₇₆S₁₈Zn_2.7B₁kg ha^-1 and N₅₂P₁₆K₁₉S₉ kg ha^-1, respectively. Such dose for Gazipur was N₁₆₆P₂₁K₁₀₀S₁₉Zn₃B₁kg ha^-1for Radish and N₅₅P₁₂K₂₂S₉ kg ha^-1for garden pea. The dose of compost was 8.3 and 2.6 t ha^-1 for radish and pea, respectively. Radish at Jessore was sown on 11 November, 2014 and harvested on 29 December for the first cycle. While at Gazipur the radish was sown on 26 November and harvesting ended at 6 January. The second cycle radish was sown on 10 November and 17 November 2015 and harvested on 30 December and 01 January and for Gazipur and Jessore, respectively. The garden pea was sown on 31 December and harvested on 03 March 2015. The garden pea sown on 7 January-2015 and harvest on 12 March, 2015 for the first cycle. In case of second cycle the pea was sown on 31 December and 01 January for Gazipur and Jessore, respectively. The 100% STB fertilizer dose for okra was N₁₀₀P₁₈K₄₉S₁₂Zn_1.75B_0.6 kg ha^-1 at Gazipur and N₉₆P₂₀K₃₈S₁₁Zn_1.8B_1.3 kg ha^-1 for Jessore. The requirement of compost for both the location was 4.2 t ha^-1. Again, the 100% STB fertilizer dose for T. aman was N₁₀₀P₆K₄₉S₉Zn_1.23kg ha^-1 at Gazipur and N₉₇P₁₁K₃₈S₁₀Zn_1.3 kg ha^-1 at Jessore. Okra seeds were sown on 20 and 10 March 2015 at Gazipur and Jessore, respectively for the first cycle and for the second cycle the okra seeds were sown on 15 March and 19 March 2016 for Gazipur and Jessore respectively. The harvesting was started at Gazipur on 17 May and at Jessore on 10 May of the same year. After the harvest of okra, the eighth crop T. aman rice (BRRI Dhan 57) was transplanted at Gazipur on 28 July and 31 July 2016 at Jessore. The crop was harvest on 24 October 2016 at Gazipur and 19 October at Jessore at its full maturity. For the third cycle (2016-2017), the component crops were sown in due time and they were harvested at their right stage of maturity. The yield and yield component data were recorded and analyzed statistically. The pant samples of the respective crop for the third cycle (2016-2017) were collected and analyzed. Using nutrient content data nutrient uptake and apparent balance were calculated. The cost and return analysis was done and BCR was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

The studied vegetable-based cropping pattern Radish-Pea-Okra-T. Aman rice appeared as productive in the studied locations, Grey Trace Soil at Joydebpur under AEZ-28 and Calcareous Floodplain Soil at Jessore under AEZ-11. Freshly prepared conventional compost formulated IPNS package (NM₃) produced luxuriant growth of vegetable crops and gave identical yield with 125% STB dose. Deep tillage produced a higher yield, which was almost similar to conventional tillage when it combined with compost formulated IPNS package. The contribution of deep tillage is getting lower with the progress of cropping following IPNS approach. The need of extra 25% chemical fertilizer than the present recommendation may be minimized with IPNS package. Nitrogen balance was found to be negative while K was apparently balanced. The balanced of P, S Zn and B found to be positive irrespective of treatments. The IPNS package along with reduced-tillage may be helpful in achieving the higher economic benefit.
