Effect of Ipns on Physico-chemical Properties of Soil and Yield of Mango (2017-2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on effect of IPNS on physico-chemical properties of soil and yield of mango was conducted at RHRS, Chapai Nawabganj during 2017-2018. The experiment was laid out in RCBD. The study comprised of 5 treatments and replicated thrice. The treatments differed significantly for their response to stone and other fruit characters. Results revealed that the application of all treatments significantly increased the quality of fruit than the control. Whereas, trees applied with 80% RDCF + 20% nutrient from CD (T₄) showed the maximum average fruit weight (240 g), fruit length (8.75 cm), edible portion (72.5%), TSS (19%) and number of fruits per plant (220) in comparison to rest of the treatments and control.

Objectives:

To observe the changes in physical and chemical properties of soil;
To find out the influence of organic fertilizer on Mango; and
To develop a balanced fertilizer recommendation for maximizing the yield of Mango.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj during 2017-2018. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two replications in the experimental fruit orchard. The experiment comprised five treatments of different fertilizer doses. The following treatments were used: T₁ Control, T₂ 100% RDCF, T₃ 125% RDCF, T₄ 80% RDCF + 20% nutrient from CD, T₅ 60% RDCF + 40% nutrient from CD. The recommended dose of chemical fertilizer (RDCF) was N₉₂₀P₂₀₀K₂₅₀S₁₀₀Zn₉ g plant^-1. Irrigation was done by basin method and applied for two times, 1^st time on 20 March, 2018 and 2^nd time on14 April, 2018.

The post-harvest soil samples collected after harvest are now processing for chemical analysis. The initial soil samples collected by a push type auger were analyzed for SOM, total N, P, K, S, Zn, B and others. The SOM was determined by wet oxidation (Jackson 1973), total N by a modified Kjeldahl method (Page et al., 1989) and total P by using the SnCl₂ reduction method (Black, 1965). The pH was determined through glass electrode pH meter method (Jackson 1962), K and S were determined through NH₄O AC method (Hanlon and Johnson, 1984) and turbidimetric method (Sperber, 1984), respectively. Micronutrients were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Particle size distribution of the initial soil was analysed by the hydrometer method (Black, 1965) and the textural class was determined using the USDA texture triangle. The BD of the soil samples were determined by core sampler method (Karim et al., 1988). Field capacity was measured though pressure plate method. The mango samples were finally assessed for TSS following the method described by Ranganna (1986).

Data on yield contributing characteristics like fruit and stone weight, length, breadth, thickness, skin weight, edible portion, TSS, and fruit size were collected during the mango bearing period. The compiled data were subjected to statistically analysis for interpretation of the results.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering stone and other fruit characteristics of mango, the treatments T₄=80% RDCF + 20% nutrient from CD produced maximum fruit weight (240 g), TSS (19%) content, edible portion (72.5%), fruits plant^-1 (220), yield (53 kg plant^-1). As it was 1st year observation, this experiment should be continued for verification of the result.
