An enumeration work for the measurement of soil physical and chemical properties of Plant Genetic Resources Centre farm of BARI was driven during 2017-2018. A total of 18 composite soil samples maintaining 3 depths (0-15, 15-30 and 30-45 cm were collected from Block 32 under Plant Genetic Resources Centre farm of BARI. Upper two layers of soil represent sandy loam and loam texture while other two layers belong to sandy clay loam and in some cases clay loam which reflect the intense use of organic matter, green manure and sand deposition due to land development with imported soil.  Bulk density varied from 1.36 to 1.63 g cc-1 where all sub blocks contained more or less same pattern. Field capacity (FC) varied from 26.69 to 33.82% where sub-block 1, 3 and 6 gave comparatively more field capacity than resting due to more clay content in that soils. Moisture content was higher upper layer (0-15 cm) than other layers. pH of the studied soil appeared to be slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. Sub block 6 gave relatively higher pH than other sub blocks. Organic matter content was considerable in top soil but poor in sub soils. The content of total -N is very low in all sub blocks. Phosphorus content of the tested soil was medium to optimum in top soil but sub soils contained poor in amount whereas S content was low to medium in all sub blocks. The tested soil retained high amount of basic cation whereas low in potassium content. Micronutrient like zinc was medium to optimum whereas boron was good in amount.

To determine the physical and chemical properties of BARI farm and to provide message on crop suitability based on physical environment.

An inventory work on for the metering of physical and chemical properties of soils under Plant Genetic Resources Centre farm of BARI was carried out during 2017-2018. A total of 18 composite soil samples maintaining 3 depths (0-15, 15-30 and 30-45 cm) collected from 6 sub-blocks viz. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Soil samples were collected using spade, Khurpi, sabol, hammer, core sampler, soil sampler and scale along with taking GPS reading (Table 1). The soil samples were dried at room temperature mixed thoroughly, grinded, sieved with a 2 mm sieve and preserved in plastic containers for subsequent laboratory analysis. Soil samples were then analyzed for SOM, total N and available P. The SOM was determined by wet oxidation (Jackson 1973), total N by a modified Kjeldahl method (Page et al., 1989) available P by the Olsen method (Olsen et al., 1989 and Olsen and Dean, 1954). pH was determined through glass electrode pH meter method, K and S were determined through NH4OAC method and turbidimetric method, respectively. Micronutrients were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Particle size distribution of the initial soil was analysed by the hydrometer method (Black, 1965) and the textural class was determined using the USDA texture triangle. The BD of the soil samples were determined by core sampler method (Karim et al., 1988). Moisture content was determined by gravimetric method (Black, 1965). Field capacity was done though pressure plate method.

Sub block 1, 3 and 6 (especially sub block 6) appeared to comparatively more fertile than other sub blocks might be due to intensive crop cultivation through frequent chemical and organic fertilizer application. In case of sub block 1, 3 and 6 represented relatively less soil bulk density, higher water holding capacity and fewer amounts of sand particles than other sub blocks. The tested soil retained relatively good amount of phosphorus, sulphur, calcium, magnesium, boron and zinc but poor amount of total-N and potassium content. Organic matter content in top soil was considerable but extremely poor in sub soil. The soils appeared to relatively good in physical properties as indicated by medium bulk density and good water holding capacity and less compaction due to less hard ploughpan.
