Effect of Different Irrigation Levels and Row Spacing on Soil Salinity and Yield of Mustard in the Gtfp Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Irrigation is a vital factor for proper growth and development of mustard in dry season. An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-2018 to observe the interaction effect of different irrigation level and row spacing on soil salinity and yield of mustard. There were three irrigation levels viz. T₁ = No irrigation (I0), T₂ = One irrigation at 22-25 DAS (I1), T₃ = Two irrigations at 22-25 DAS and 52-55 DAS (I2) in main plot and in sub plot three types of row spacing were examined where, S₁ = Line to line 20 cm, S₂ = Line to line 30 cm, S₃ = Line to line 40 cm spacing. Highest seed yield (1.50 t/ha) was recorded in T₃S₃(Table 5) combination with higher BCR (2.0) level (Table 6) which was significantly higher than the rest of the treatment combinations. The lowest seed yield was recorded (1.18 t ha^-1) in T₁S₁. Two irrigations at 22-25 DAS and 52-55 DAS keeping row to row distance 40cm would be a better management practice for increasing the yield of mustard.

Objectives:

To study the impact of suitable row spacing and optimum irrigation levels on the performance of the mustard.

Methodology:

Experimental site and design:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-2018 to observe the interaction effect of different irrigation level and row spacing on soil salinity and yield of mustard. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ -13. The land topography was medium low. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture with pH 7.2.

There were three irrigation levels viz.T₁ = No irrigation (I₀), T₂ = One irrigation at 22-25 DAS (I₁), T₃ = Two irrigations at 22-25 DAS and 52-55 DAS (I₂) in main plot and in sub plot, three dimension of row spacing were examined where, S₁ = Line to line 20 cm, S₂ = Line to line 30 cm, S₃ = Line to line 40 cm spacing. The crop variety was BARI mustard-14. The experiment was tested in RCBD (2 factor) with three replications. Unit main plot size was 4.6 × 2.5m and sub-plot size was 1.2m × 2.5m. At every 15 days interval soil salinity (dS m^-1) was measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data on yield and yield components were recorded and analysed statistically using MSTAT-C program.

Seed sowing & crop management:

The experimental plots were fertilized with 170-85-150 kg/ha TSP, MoP and Gypsum, respectively. All the fertilizers were applied as basal except Urea. Seeds were sown in 28 November, 2017 in row to row distance of 30 cm. Three irrigations were applied during the growing period. Weeding was done at 14 days after sowing followed by thinning to keep plant to plant distance of 10 cm. Disease and insect pests were always well controlled using suggested applies (BARI, 2014). The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

Two irrigations at 22-25 DAS and 52-55 DAS keeping row to row distance 40cm would be a better management practice for increasing the yield of mustard. It is the 2^nd year of experiment. It should be replicated for 3 years to infer final recommendation.
