A field experiment was conducted at Central Farm, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barishal during the rabi season of 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 to evaluate the efficiency of cowdung and/or poultry manure on growth and yield of tomato. The crop variety was BARI Tomato-14. Cowdung and poultry manure were used with chemical fertilizers. There were seven treatments viz. T1: Control, T2: 100% recommanded dose (RD)T3: 75% RD, T4: 100% RD + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, T5: 100% RD + poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, T6: 75% RD + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, T7: 75% RD + poulty manure @ 5 t ha-1 which were replicated for four times. Cowdung, poultry manure along with chemical fertilizers had significant influence on plant height (cm), no of cluster plant-1, no of fruits plant-1, fruit yield plant-1 (kg), fruit yield (t ha-1) of tomato. In 2016-2017 significantly higher fruit yield (65.20 t ha-1) was recorded with 100% RD plus cowdung 5 t ha-1 followed by yield obtained from 100% RD + poultry manure @ 3 t ha-1, 75% RD + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, 75% RD + poulty manure @ 3 t ha-1. On the other hand, during 2017-18 maximum 95.46 t ha-1 tomato yield was recorded with 75% RD plus cowdung 5 t ha-1 which was found identical with the result gathered from 100% RD + poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, 100% RD + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, 75% RD + poulty manure @ 5 t ha-1. Therefore, 25% RD fertilizer could be reduced when integrated use of cowdung and/or poultry manure in tomato cultivation in southwestern region, Barishal (Non–calcareous Grey Floodplain Soils under AEZ-13).

To evaluate the efficiency of cowdung and/or poultry manure on growth and yield of tomato.

A field experiment was carried out during the robi season of 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 for tomato at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Rahmatpur, Barishal. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. There were seven treatment combinations viz. T1: Control, T2: 100% recommended dose (RD) T3: 75% RD, T4: 100% RD + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, T5: 100% RD + poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, T6: 75% RD + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, T7: 75% RD + poulty manure @ 5 t ha-1. The tested crop was tomato (cv. BARI Tomato-14). The unit plots measured 2.4 m × 2.4 m in size. Seeds were sown in seed bed and transplanted after 30 days in field. The physical and chemical properties of the initial soil samples from experimental fields at a depth of 0-15 cm were collected, analyzed and documented. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, zinc and boron were used in the form of urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Recommended fertilizer dose (BARC, 2012) for tomato (160 kg N, 90 kg P, 60 kg K, 30 kg S, 1.5 kg Zn and 0.5 kg B kg ha-1) were used. All P, K, S, Zn, B and 1/3rd amount urea were applied at the time of final land preparation and the remaining 2/3rd amount of urea-N were applied in two equal installments at 25 and 45 days of transplanting. All the intercultural operations such as irrigation, sticking, weeding, insect control etc. were done as and when necessary. Data on yield and yield components were recorded at maturity. The tomato was harvested on 05 March to 08 April 2018. The initial soil samples at a depth of 0-15 cm from the experimental fields were collected and analyzed following standard methods and recorded. Statistical analyses were conducted using standard statistical procedures (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) implemented in Statistix 10. The data were examined by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Differences between the treatments were determined by ANOVA, and Fisher’s protected least significant difference (LSD) was calculated at the 0.05 probability level for treatment mean comparisons.

Application of 75% of recommended chemical fertilizers plus 5 t ha-1 cowdung (T6)  can improve plant growth and higher yield. But 100% RD + poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, (T5)  100% RD + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1 (T6),  75% RD + poulty manure @ 5 t ha-1 (T7) were recorded identical fruit yield with full dose of chemical fertilizers plus 5 t ha-1 cowdung. Therefore, 25% recommended dose of chemical fertilizer could be reduced when integrated use of cowdung and/or poultry manure. To improve soil health and to maintain it as well as to improve tomato production, we have to reduce chemical fertilizer. As the yield was maximum in 75% chemical fertilizer plus cowdung or poultry manure, poor farmer can adopt these treatment for tomato cultivation in southwestern region, Barishal (Non–calcareous Grey Floodplain Soils under AEZ-13). Further yearly studies and economic analysis are required for final recommendation.
