Effect of Irrigation and Compost Based Organic Manure on the Yield of Tomato in Salt Affected Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Salt-affected soils generally exhibit poor structural stability due to low organic matter content. An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-2018 to know the effect of organic manuring and irrigation water on soil properties and yield of tomato. There were three irrigations (T₁ = 100% water requirement up to FC, T₂ = 80% water requirement up to FC, T₃ = 60% water requirement up to FC) and four fertilizer doses (F₁ = 100% from compost, F₂ = 50% compost + 50% NPKS from chemical fertilizer, F₃ = 75% compost + 25% NPKS from chemical fertilizer, F₄ = Full dose of NPK as per STB). The highest fruit yield (35.40 t ha^-1) was recorded in T₂F₃(80 % FC and 75% compost along with 25% NPKS from chemical fertilizer) which was statistically similar with T₁F₃ and T₃F₃ but significantly higher than of the treatment combination.

Objectives:

To know the effect of organic manuring and irrigation water on soil properties and yield of tomato.

Methodology:

Experimental site:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-2018 to know the effect of organic manuring and irrigation water on the yield of tomatoes. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ -13. The land topography was medium-high. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture pH 7.30.

Experimental design & data collection:

There were three irrigations (T₁ = 100% water requirement up to FC, T₂ = 80% water requirement up to FC, T₃ = 60% water requirement up to FC) and four fertilizer doses (F₁ = 100% from compost, F₂ = 50% compost + 50% NPKS from chemical fertilizer, F₃ = 75% compost + 25% NPKS from chemical fertilizer, F₄ = Full dose of NPK as per STB). The crop variety was BARI tomato-14. The experiment was tested in RCBD (2 factor) with three replications. Unit main plot size was 4.8m × 2m and the sub-plot size was 1.2m × 2m. Data for yield components were taken from five randomly selected plants of each plot. At every 15 days interval, soil salinity (dS m^-1) was measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Collected data were analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C program.

Seed sowing & crop management:

Transplanting of tomato seedling was doneat 02 November, 2017at Benarpota with a row to row distance 60 cm and plant to plant 40 cm. The trial was fertilized following recommended treatments dose in where full dose considered with the application of Urea, TSP, MoP and Compost were 450 kg ha^-1, 250 kg ha^-1, 260 kg ha^-1 and 10 t ha^-1 respectively. One-half of organic manure and the entire amount of P and S were applied as basal during final land preparation as per treatments. The remaining compost was applied in pits before planting of seedlings. Nitrogen and potassium were applied in two equal splits at 15 and 35 days after transplanting as ring method. Two times weeding and necessary plant protection measures were taken. The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

Water used in tomato up to 80% FC and 75% compost along with 25% NPKS from chemical fertilizer would be a better technology for improving yield, soil properties in saline areas of Satkhira with an increased economic return. It should be replicated next 3 years for final recommendation.
