Study on Rhizobium, Azotobacter and Phosphate Solubilizing Bacterial (psb) Population Status in Soils of Different Aezs of Bangladesh (2016-2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rhizobium plays a major role in legumes to supply nitrogen through symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Fifteen soil samples were collected from selected locations of different AEZs of Bangladesh to know the Rhizobium population at different AEZs (5 AEZs) of Bangladesh. Soil samples were collected from BARI Central Farm (AEZ-28), RARS, Jamalpur (AEZ-09), RARS, Jessore (AEZ-11); RARS, Ishurdi (AEZ-11); Farmer’s field, Norail (AEZ-12); Farmer’s field, Faridpur (AEZ-12); Farmer’s field, Pabna (AEZ-11); Farmer’s field, Chuadanga (AEZ-11); RHRS, Chapainawabgonj (Fruit plants) (AEZ-11); RHRS, Patuakhali (Fruit plants) (AEZ-13); ARS, Khulna (Fruit plants) (AEZ-13). Rhizobium was grown in media and Rhizobium colonies were counted. The highest Rhizobium population (1.5 ´ 10⁶g^-1 soil) was found in soils of RARS, Jamalpur (Groundnut expt.) (AEZ-09) and and the lowest population (5.0 ´ 10³g^-1 soil) was observed in soils of RHRS, Patuakhali (Fruit plants) (AEZ-13).

Objectives:

To evaluate the distribution and abundance of the Rhizobium species from different AEZs of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Eleven sites were selected considering 5 AEZs for collecting soil samples for Rhizobium population viz. BARI Central Farm (AEZ-28), RARS, Jamalpur (AEZ-09), RARS, Jessore (AEZ-11); RARS, Ishurdi (AEZ-11); Farmer’s field, Norail (AEZ-12); Farmer’s field, Faridpur (AEZ-12); Farmer’s field, Pabna (AEZ-11); Farmer’s field, Chuadanga (AEZ-11); RHRS, Chapainawabgonj (Fruit plants) (AEZ-11); RHRS, Patuakhali (Fruit plants) (AEZ-13); ARS, Khulna (Fruit plants) (AEZ-13). Rhizobium was grown in media and Rhizobium colonies were counted. Land areas of these agro ecological zones were recognized on the basis of hydrology, physiography, soil types, tidal activity, cropping patterns, and seasons. Representative soil samples have been collected from different crop fields of these agro ecological zones. Soils were taken from three different places of each crop field from 0-6 inches depth and then the soils were placed in plastic bags. The plastic bags were pin holed for aeration, and stored in laboratory prior to analysis. Media was prepared for growing of Rhizobium colonies. After serial dilution one ml of solution was poured in a petridish having agar media. The petriplates were incubated three days for counting Rhizobium colonies.

Achievement/Findings:

Rhizobium population was found in different numbers in different locations. The highest Rhizobium population (1.5 ´ 10⁶g^-1 soil) was found in soils of RARS, Jamalpur (Groundnut expt.) (AEZ-09) and the lowest population (5.0 ´ 10³g^-1 soil) was observed in soils of RHRS, Patuakhali (Fruit plants) (AEZ-13). Further studies in soils of different AEZs of Bangladesh are needed to verify the Rhizobium population.
