Validation of Biofertilizer on Different Legume Crops (2016-2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments on biofertilizer were carried out at Multi Location Testing site, Tularampur, Norail on lentil during rabi 2016-2017; Farming System Research & Development (FSRD) site, Hatgobindapur, Faridpur both on lentil and groundnut during rabi 2016-2017, at Multi Location Trial (MLT) site in Gangni, Meherpur on lentil and at MLT site in Chuadanga on chickpea during rabi 2016-2017; Farming System Research & Development (FSRD) site, Pushpapara, Pabna on lentil; at Charland of Jamalpur on lentil at Multi Location Testing site, Ulipur, Kurigram on soybean during rabi 2016-2017 with the objectives i) to evaluate the response of lentil, chickpea, groundnut and soybean to biofertilizer under farmers’ field condition, and ii) to motivate uses of biofertilizer instead of N-fertilizer for pulse cultivation. The experiment was laidout in RCBD with 4/6 dispersed replications. Unit plot size was 15 m ´ 10 m. Three fertilizer treatments viz. T₁: 22-42-20-5 kg P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₂: 22-42-20-5 kg P-K-S-Zn ha^-1 + Rhizobium Inoculum and T₃: 50-22-42-20-5 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1was studied. BARI Masur-6/7 of lentil, BARI Chola-5 of chickpea, BARI Chinabadam-6 of groundnut, BARI Soybean-6 of soybean and peat based rhizobial inoculum (strain BARI RLc-102 for lentil, strain BARI RCa-202 for chickpea, strain BARI RAh-801 for groundnut, BARI RGm-901 for soybean @ 1.5 kg ha^-1 were used in demonstration trial. Experimental result revealed that application of biofertilizer along with PKSZn produced higher nodulation, seed yield and yield attributes of lentil at Norail; nodulation, seed yield and yield attributes of lentil at Faridpur; nodulation, seed yield and yield attributes of lentil and chickpea at Chuadanga and Meherpur; nodulation,seed yield and yield attributes of lentil at Pabna; seed yield and yield attributes of lentil at Sherpur; seed yield and yield attributes of soybean at Kurigram. It is evident from the experiment that application of biofertilizer instead of applying nitrogenous fertilizer can achieve the higher yield of lentil at farmers’ field in Norail, Faridpur, Meherpur, Pabna, Sherpur; chickpea at farmers’ field in Chuadanga, soybean at Kurigram. Higher BCR was noted in T₂ treatment where Rhizobium plus chemical fertilizers (PKSZn) were used.

Objectives:

i) to evaluate the response of some pulse crops to biofertilizer under farmers’ field condition, and

ii) to reduce the uses of N-fertilizer for lentil cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design having six replications with three treatments. The unit plot size was 15 m × 10 m. The variety BARI Masur-6/7 of lentil, BARI Chola-5 of chickpea, BARI Chinabadam-6 of groundnut, BARI Soybean-6 of soybean and peat based rhizobial inoculum (strain BARI RLc-102 for lentil, strain BARI RCa-202 for chickpea, strain BARI RAh-801 for groundnut, strain BARI RGm-901 for soybean @ 1.5 kg ha^-1 were used in demostration trial. There were three treatments viz. T₁: 22-42-20-5 kg P-K-S-Zn ha^-1, T₂: 22-42-20-5 kg P-K-S-Zn ha^-1 + Inoculum, T₃: 50-22-42-20-5 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1 was studied. The above peat based rhizobial inoculum was used @ 1.5 kg ha^-1 containing about 10⁸ cells g^-1 inoculum. Chemical fertilizers i.e. P, K, S and Zn were applied in all treatments as basal dose @ 22 kg P ha^-1 from TSP, 42 kg K ha^-1 from MP, 20 kg S ha^-1 from gypsum and 5 kg Zn ha^-1 from zinc sulphate for lentil, chickpea. In T₃ treatment, 50-22-42-20-5 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1 for lentil and chickpea, and 100-22-42-40-5 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha^-1 for groundnut and soybean were used. Lentil was sown on 15 November 2016 at Norail, 23-24 November 2016 at Faridpur, 27 November 2016 at Meherpur, 17-20 November 2016 at Pabna, 7 November 2016 at Sherpur, Chickpea was sown on 18-30 November 2016 at Chuadanga, groundnut was sown on December 2016 at Faridpur, soybean was sown on 29 November 2016 at Kurigram. The rhizobial population of Rhizobium inoculant was about 10⁸ cells g^-1 of inoculant. The initial soil data is presented in Table 1. Rhizobium population at Norail, Faridpur, Chuadanga and Pabna was 1.0 ´ 10⁵, 2.0 ´ 10⁵, 2.0 ´ 10⁴ and 3.0 ´ 10⁴ cells g^-1 of soil.

During the course of the experiment, growth and development of plants in the field were carefully observed. Lentil was harvested on 05 March 2017 at Norail, 04 March 2017 at Faridpur, 16 March 2017 at Meherpur, 02 March 2017 at Pabna, 23 February 2017 at Sherpur, chickpea was harvested on 03 April 2017 at Chuadanga, soybean was harvested on 10 April 2017 at Kurigram. All the data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

For further verification the trial may be repeated in next year.
