Effects of Rhizobium and Mycorrhizal Inoculation on Nodulation, Plant Characters and Yield of Soybean (2016-2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted at Central Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 2016-2017 with the objectives to determine the effect of various phosphorus levels, nitrogen fertilizer, mycorrhizal incorporation and Rhizobium inoculation on nodulation and yield of soybean. Unit plot size was 4 m × 3 m. The experiment was designed in randomized complete block having 3 replications in each treatment. Seven different treatments were T₁: Rhizobium inoculant (R) + 100% P; T₂: R + Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM); T₃: R. + 75% P + AM; T₄: Nitrogen (N) + 100% P; T₅: N + AM; T₆: N + 75% P + AM and T₇: Control. Among 7 different treatments, Rhizobium inoculant with mycorrhizal incorporation and 75% P showed the highest nodule number (75.67 plant^-1). The highest plant height (69.16 cm) was observed at the Rhizobium inoculant with mycorrhiza and 75% P incorporated plot. Significantly the highest root weight (1.64 g), shoot weight (11.03 g) were also found at the Rhizobium inoculant with mycorrhizal and 75% P incorporated plot. The highest root length (15.13 cm) and shoot length (55.50 cm) was found at the Rhizobium inoculant with 100% P treated plot. Significantly the highest seed yield (1.78 t ha^-1) and stover yield (2.81 t ha^-1) were found at the same treatment.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of various phosphorus levels, nitrogen fertilizer, mycorrhizal incorporation and rhizobium inoculation on nodulation and yield of soybean.

Methodology:

Soybean was sown on 8 January 2017 at the central farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur. The experiment was designed in randomized complete block having 3 replications in each treatment and variety was BARI Soybean-6. Unit plot size was 4 m ´ 3 m. There were 7 treatments viz. T₁: Rhizobium inoculant (R) + 100% P; T₂: R + Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM); T₃: R. + 75% P + AM; T₄: Nitrogen (N) + 100% P; T₅: N + AM; T₆: N + 75% P + AM and T₇: Control. Basic doses of potash @ 42 kg K ha^-1as MoP, sulphur @ 40 kg S ha^-1as gypsum and zinc @ 5 kg Zn ha^-1 as zinc oxide were applied in the field. Urea was applied in the field at three equal splits. One third of urea-N was applied during final land preparation. Peat based rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RGm-901) @ 1.5 kg ha^-1 was used for seed inoculation. Peat based rhizobial inoculum was used containing about 10⁸ cells g^-1 inoculum. Mycorrhiza was incorporated with soil @ 20 t ha^-1. Different levels of phosphatic fertilizer were applied in the field as a treatment. Phosphatic fertilizer was applied as a source of triple superphosphate.

During the course of the experiment growth and development of plants in the field were carefully observed. At 50% flowering stage, 10 randomly selected plants were uprooted from each unit plot. Dry weight of roots, shoots and nodules including nodule numbers were recorded. The plants were harvested on 10 April 2017. Data on plant height, 1000-seed weight (g), no. of pods plant^-1, no. of seeds pod^-1, seed yield and stover yield were also taken. All data were analyzed statistically.

Methods of chemical analysis:

Soil pH was measured by a combined glass calomel electrode (Jackson, 1958). Organic carbon was determined by wet oxidation method (Walkley and Black). Total N was determined by modified Kjeldahl method. Calcium, K and Mg were determined by NH₄OAc extraction method. Copper, Fe, Mn and Zn were determined by DTPA extraction followed by AAS reading. Boron was determined by CaCl₂ extraction method. Phosphorus was determined by Olsen method. Sulphur was determined by CaH₄(PO₄)₂.H₂O extraction followed by turbidimetric turbidity method with BaCl_2.

Achievement/Findings:

From the second year trial, it may be concluded that significantly the highest seed yield (1.78 t ha^-1) and stover yield (2.81 t ha^-1) was found in Rhizobium inoculant with mycorrhizal incorporation and 75% P. Further studies are required to confirm the result.
