Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Vermicompost on Growth and Yield of Onion (2016-2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted during the rabi seasonof 2016-2017 at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jamalpur to increase yield of onion using arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and vermicompost, and to improve P use efficiency as regulated by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. There were seven treatments comprising T₁: Control, T₂: Soil test based (STB) dose (FRG-2012), T₃: STB + Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), T₄: (STB – 25% P + AMF), T₅: (Dose of T₂as supplied 75% from Chemical fertilizers and 25% from Vermicompost), T₆: (T₅- P + AMF) and T₇: T₅ + AMF. The highest bulb yield (15.28 t ha^-1) of onion was obtained from T₇(T₅ + AMF) treatment which was statistically similar with T₆(T₅- P + AMF) treatment and T₄: STB – 25% P + Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) treatment which produced bulb yield of 12.91 tha^-1and 11.99 t ha^-1, respectively. The lowest bulb yield (4.78 t ha^-1) obviously recorded from control T₁ treatment. The highest spore number (97.3) was obtained from T₇(T₅ + AMF) treatment and the lowest spore number (40.0) was obtained from T₁treatment. The highest root colonization (34.0%) was found in T₇(T₅ + AMF) treatment and the lowest colonization (10.7%) was recorded in T₁treatment. From the trial, it can be concluded that vermicompost and AMF inoculant along with IPNS based chemical fertilizers is the best treatment and it is recommended for onion cultivation.

Objectives:

To study the effect of bio-fertilizer (AMF) and vermicompost on yield of onion and reduce the chemical fertilizer in onion cultivation.

Methodology:

A field trial was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jamalpur during 2016-2017 to increase yield of onion using arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and vermicompost and to improve P use efficiency as regulated by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Nutrient status of initial soil prior to fertilization is presented. Chemical composition of vermicompost has been presented.

The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design with seven treatments replicated thrice. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2 m. There were seven treatments:

T₁: Control

T₂: Soil test based (STB) dose (FRG-2012)

T₃: STB + Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)

T₄: STB – 25%P + AMF

T₅: Dose of T₂as supplied 75% from Chemical fertilizers and 25% from Vermicompost

T₆: (T₅- P ) + AMF

T₇: T₅ + AMF

Onion var. BARI Piaz-1 was used for the study. The Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungal inoculum used in this experiment was collected from Microbiology laboratory, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Two nursery beds (with inoculated and without inoculated) of 2.0 m x1.0 m were prepared thoroughly and AMF inoculated with onion seeds and maintained systematically till the seedlings were ready for transplanting. Healthy and uniform seedlings were transplanted. Three replications were made for each treatment. AM inoculum was added in all treatments except T_1, T₂ and T₅treatment. A control treatment was also included without fertilization and without inoculum addition. All PKSZnB and one third of urea-N were applied at the time of final land preparation and the remaining two third of urea-N was applied in two equal installments. The seedlings were planted at 15 cm × 10 cm spacing at 09 January, 2017. Irrigation and other intercultural management practices were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on 29 March, 2017 and the necessary data on different parameters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants. Yield data were taken from whole plot and were converted to per hectare yield. The initial soil samples at a depth of 0-15 cm from the experimental fields were collected and analyzed following standard methods. The vermicompost used in this experiment were also analyzed. Data on yield and yield attributes were recorded and analyzed statistically using statistical software STAR which was developed by IRRI. The analyzed data were compared with Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5% level.

Achievement/Findings:

From the trial, it can be concluded that T₇ (Dose of T₂as supplied 75% from chemical fertilizers and 25% from vermicompost + AMF ) is the best treatment. It may be recommended for onion cultivation.
