The experiments were conducted at BARI, Gazipur and OFRD, Bogra during 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 with the objectives to maintain soil productivity through a balanced use of mineral fertilizers  combined with organic sources of plant nutrients, improve the efficiency of plant nutrients, thus limiting losses to the environment, increase sustainable crop yield and to increase farmer’s income. There were eight treatments viz. T1: Native fertility, T2: 75% STB, T3: 100% STB, T4: 75% STB + 3 t ha-1 PM, T5: 3 t ha-1 PM + IPNS, T6: 75% STB + 5 t ha-1 CD, T7: 5 t ha-1 CD + IPNS and T8: 125% STB. IPNS means releasing amount of nutrients of cowdung and poultry manure were subtracted from STB chemical fertilizers. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Data revealed that the T5 (3 t PM + IPNS) treatment produced the highest grain yield of maize both at Gazipur (8.46 t ha-1 in 2014-2015 and 8.73 t ha-1 in 2015-2016) and at Bogra (8.11 t ha-1 in 2014-2015 and 9.67 t ha-1 in 2015-2016). The highest grain yield of T. aman at Gazipur were 3.82 t ha-1 (in 2014-2015) & 4.60 t ha-1 (in 2015-2016) and at Bogra were 3.81 t ha-1 (in 2014-2015) & 5.40 t ha-1 (in 2015-2016) obtained from T5 (3 t PM + IPNS) treatment. The highest benefit cost ratio was found in T7 (5 t CD + IPNS) treatment at both of the locations. Most of the chemical properties of post harvest soil increased due to incorporation of organic manures through integrated plant nutrition system.

The main objectives are:

  1. To maintain or enhance soil productivity through a balanced use of mineral fertilizers combined with organic sources of plant nutrients
  2. To improve the stock of plant nutrients in the soil
  3. To improve the efficiency of plant nutrients thus limiting losses to the environment
  4. To increase sustainable crop yield
  5. To increase farmer’s income

The field experiment was conducted in the Grey Terrace Soil (AEZ-28) at Gazipur and Tista Meander Floodplain Soil (AEZ-3) at OFRD, Bogra during 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. The initial soil samples collected from depth of 0-15 cm were analyzed in the laboratory following standard methods. Initial values of some important chemical parameters of soil of the experimental field were recorded. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Eight different treatments viz. T1: Native fertility, T2: 75% STB, T3: 100% STB, T4: 75% STB + 3 t ha-1 PM, T5: 3 t ha-1 PM + IPNS, T6: 75% STB + 5 t ha-1 CD, T7: 5 t ha-1 CD + IPNS, T8: 125% STB were selected for different plots randomly. IPNS means releasing amount of nutrients of cowdung and poultry manure were subtracted from STB basis chemical fertilizers. The unit plot size was 3m ´ 4m. The tested crop for maize was BARI hybrid maize-5 at Gazipur and Deculb-981 at OFRD, Bogra. Maize seeds were sown in line with 60 cm row to row and 25 cm seed to seed spacing in 27 November in 2014 & 17 November in 2015 at Gazipur and 24 November 2014 & 25 November 2015 at OFRD, Bogra. Two seeds were placed in each hole and thinned out to one when the seedlings were established properly.  Seeds were treated with vitavex prior to seeding. The T. aman variety BRRI dhan 57 were transplanted in line with 20 cm row to row and 15 cm seedlings spacing in 7 August 2015 & 14 August 2016 at Gazipur and 1 August 2015 & 27 July 2016 at OFRD, Bogra. Fertilizer N-P-K-S-B were supplied from urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and boric acid, respectively. All PKSB and 1/3 of N were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining two third of N were applied as top dress at 30 and 60 days after sowing. Three irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. The maize was harvested in 22 April 2015 and 18 April in 2016 at Gazipur and 3 May in 2015 and 24 April in 2016 at OFRD, Bogra. Mungbean could not sown due to frequently heavy rainfall at Gazipur in both of two years but in case of Bogra location, mungbean was damaged at vegetative stage due to heavy rainfall. The T. aman rice was harvested in 26 October 2015 and 30 October 2016 at Gazipur and 4 November 2015 and 30 October 2016 at OFRD, Bogra. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTATC and Statistical Analysis System version 9.3 (SAS Institute Inc. NC, USDA). DMRT and Tukey’s test was used to determine the significant differences between treatments (Steel and Torrie, 1960). Plant samples and post harvest soil samples were collected from each plot for chemical analysis.

The experiment was conducted in the year of 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. On the basis of the experimental results the following conclusions and recommendations can be drawn: Combined application of organic manures and inorganic fertilizers produced higher crop yields in maize-mungbean-T. aman rice cropping pattern than inorganic fertilizers; Poultry manure and cowdung had significant positive effect on the yield and yield contributing characters of different crops of the pattern; Soil Test Basis (STB) IPNS treatment through poultry manure recorded higher grain yield of different crops in maize-mungbean-T. aman rice cropping pattern at both location; IPNS treatments through cowdung or poultry manures produced almost similar yield and it contain balance and optimum nutrients than that of 100% STB and INM treatments; IPNS through poultry manure or cowdung increased chemical properties of post harvest soil and thus sustained productivity of soil. So it could be used in maize-mungbean-T. aman rice cropping pattern for sustainable productivity and soil health improvement; The highest benefit cost ratio was found in T7 (5 t CD + IPNS) treatment.
