A pot experiment was conducted at the net house of Soil Science Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute on lentil during rabi season of 2019-2020 to determine the critical limit of zinc in soils and plant grown in twenty soils collected from the six Agro-ecological zones (AEZs ) such as Tista Meander Floodplain (AEZ-3), Karatoya-Bangali Floodplain (AEZ-4), Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplain (AEZ-8), High Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ-11), Low Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ-12) and Madhupur Tract (AEZ-28). The soils contained pH 5.91-8.37, organic matter 0.27-1.67%. The available Zn content was estimated by one extraction method as 0.005 M DTPA (Diethylene Triamine Penta Acetic Acid). The DTPA extractable Zn in different soils ranged from 0.49-4.20 ppm. The soil available Zn was negatively correlated with soil pH, Ca, Mg and positively correlated with OM, K, dry matter yield. However, the point bellows which lentil shows zinc deficiency in soils was 0.64 ppm (previous year it was 0.56 ppm) which can be expressed as 0.6 ppm as determined by Cate and Nelson’s graphical procedure.

To determine the critical concentration of Zn for lentil in different soils for making zinc application more rational.

A Pot experiment with in variety BARI Masur-6 was conducted in the net house of the Soil Science Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur with 20 top soils (0-15 cm). Six AEZs such as Tista Meander Floodplain (AEZ-3), Karatoya-Bangali Floodplain (AEZ-4), Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplain (AEZ-8), High Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ-11), Low Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ-12) and Madhupur Tract (AEZ-28) encompassing seven districts such as Rangpur, Nilphamari, Pabna, Bogra, Rajshahi, Manikgonj and Gazipur. There were two   Zn treatments viz. 0 and 5 ppm. Each of the treatments was replicated thrice in a completely randomized design (CRD) to give a total of 6 (2 treatments´ 3 replications) pots for each soil. Thus the total number of pots used in this study was 120 (6 ´ 20). An amount of 10 kg of each soil was weighed into a series of 6 pots and ten lentil seeds were planted in each pot. A basal application was made with 14 ppm N, 25 ppm P, 30 ppm K, 14 ppm S, 1.5 ppm B in each pot to support normal plant growth. After germination, eight plants were allowed to grow. The soils of all pots were kept moist with addition of distilled water periodically. In all pots 7 ppm N as urea was applied at vegetative stage after 25 days of planting. The plants were cut at the stage of 100% flowering, washed with distilled water and dried in an oven at 70°C for 24 hours. Available Zn content of soil was determined by DTPA (0.005 M) method. The extractable Zn content of soil and Zn content of plant in the digest were determined directly by atomic absorption spectrophotometer.The critical level of soil Zn was determined by graphical method (Cate and Nelson 1965).  According to the procedure (Cate and Nelson, 1965) a scatter diagram of the relative yields (Bray’s per cent yield) as Y-axis versus soil test values as X- axis was plotted. Bray’s per cent yield was determined by followings: Bray’s percent dry matter yield= {(Dery Matter yield without Zntreatment) / (Dry Matter Yield with Zntreatment)} x 100.

The results indicated that the critical values of DTPA-extracted Zn in soils were 0.64 mg kg-1 (previous year we found 0.56 mg kg-1) which was very close to the present critical limit (0.60 mg kg-1).  During lentil cultivation, the soil will show Zn deficiency when it contains <0.6 mg kg-1 DTPA-extracted Zn.
