Control of Foot Rot Disease Caused by Sclerotium Rolfsii of Bush Bean (2015 - 2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted during winter, 2015-2016 to observe the performance of Provax 200 WP and Trichoderma sp. against foot rot disease of bush bean in the field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur. Soil and seed of bush bean were treated with Provax 200 WP and Trichoderma sp to evaluate its performance. Every treatment showed significant results against Sclerotium rolfsii causing foot rot disease. The highest disease reduction (76%) and yield increase (94.2%) was observed in T₄(soil treatment with Trichoderma sp.).

Objectives:

This study was designed to find out suitable management options against foot rot disease of bush bean .

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted in the field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur. BARI Bush bean 3 was used in this experiment. Inoculums of Sclerotium rolfsii was uniformly (20g/m²) mixed with soil before 15 days of seed sowing. Trichoderma isolates were isolated from the vascular system of panama infected Banana. Antagonism of the isolated Trichoderma against Sclerotium rolfsii was evaluated by the dual culture method. Five treatments with three replication were designed following RCBD. Five treatments were T₁= Control, T₂=Soil treatment with Provax 200 wp, T₃=Seed treatment with Provax 200 wp, T₄=Soil treated with Trichoderma sp. and T₅=Seed treatment with Trichoderma sp. Data was recorded on yield, percentage mortality, and infected plant after emergence.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest yield (195 kg/ha) yield was observed in T₄and the lowest (107 kg/ha) was found in control. Every treatment showed an above 50 percent yield increase over control. The lowest pre-emergence mortality (6.4%) was found in T₂followed by T₄(8.5%). The lowest 6.2% plant was infected after emergence in T₄followed by T₅(10 %). Every treatment showed high performance in disease reduction. The T₄showed the highest 76% disease reduction over control. Application of Trichoderma sp. was effective in controlling foot rot disease of the bush bean. Soil application was more effective than seed treatment.
