Effect of Organic Manures on Vegetable Crop Production and Carbon Accumulation in Soil (2019-2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted in the Grey Terrace Soil of Gazipur (AEZ-28) on effect of organic manure on vegetable production and carbon accumulations in soil during the year of 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 with the objectives to enhance carbon accumulation in soil, to improve the stock of organic carbon in the soil and to increase crop yield through integrated plant nutrition system (IPNS). There were six treatments viz. T₁: Native nutrient, T₂: 75% STB, T₃: 100% STB, T₄: 5 t ha^-1CD + IPNS, T₅: 3 t ha^-1 PM + IPNS, T₆: 5 t ha^-1 VC + IPNS. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with four replications. Data revealed that the T₆ (VC + IPNS) treatment produced the highest yield of cabbage (85.5 t ha^-1in 2019 and 85.8 t ha^-1in 2020). This trend of influence was consistent for almost all the yield contributing characters of cabbage. The native nutrient treatment produced the lowest yield (11.0 t ha^-1in 2019 and 12.1 t ha^-1in 2020). The highest nutrient uptake by cabbage was noted in T₆ treatment. IPNS through vermicompost improved nutrient status in post harvest soil. Organic manures also increased accumulation of organic carbon in soil. Highest gross return (8,56,600 Tk. ha^-1) was obtained in T₆ (VC + IPNS) treatment but BCR was lower in this treatment due to high price of vermicompost. Among the all IPNS treatments, the highest BCR (6.27) was found in T₅ (PM + IPNS). Therefore, NPKSZnB @ 213-29-48-10-1.22-1.2 kg ha^-1 with 5 t VC ha^-1 can be recommended for cabbage production in Grey Terace Soil of Gazipur (AEZ-28).

Objectives:

i). To enhance carbon accumulation in soil, ii) to improve the stock of organic carbon in the soil and iii) to increase crop yield through integrated plant nutrition system (IPNS).

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted in the Grey Terrace Soil of Gazipur (AEZ-28) on effect of organic manure on vegetable production and carbon accumulations in soil during the year of 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. First two years, the research was conducted on broccolli production. Last two years, the research was conducted on cabbage production. The initial soil samples collected from the depth of 0-15 cm at the experimental plot and it was analyzed in the laboratory following standard methods. Initial values of some important chemical & physical parameters of the experimental soil are presented respectively. Chemical analysis of cowdung (CD), poultry manure (PM) and vermicompost (VC) were done which have been shown. From initial soil test results, the rate of different nutrients were calculated which was shown.

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Six different treatments viz. T₁: Native Nutrient, T₂: 75% STB from chemical fertilizers, T₃: 100% STB (Soil Test Based) chemical fertilizer, T₄: 5 t ha^-1 CD + IPNS, T₅:3 t ha^-1 PM + IPNS, T₆:5 t ha^-1 VC + IPNS. IPNS means releasing amount of nutrients of cowdung, poultry manure and vermicompost were subtracted from STB based chemical fertilizers. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m. The tested crop was cabbage and the variety was Atlas. Thirtyone days old seedlings of cabbage was transplanted in line with 50 cm row to row and 50 cm plant to plant on 22 November 2018 and 15 November 2019.

Fertilizer N-P-K-S-Zn-B was supplied from urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. All PKSZnB and ¹/₃ of N were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining two third of N were equally applied as top dress at 30 and 60 days after transplanting. Three irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. The cabbage was harvested on 20 February 2019 and 17 February 2020. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically using Statistics 10. LSD test was used to determine the significant differences among treatments (Steel and Torrie, 1960). Plant samples and post harvest soil samples were collected from each plot for chemical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The experiment was conducted in the year of 2016-2017 and it continued to 2019-2020. Considering results of the two years of experiment, 5 t ha^-1VC + IPNS. Organic manuring through IPNS treatments slightly increased total N, available P, available S, Zn, B and exchangeable K contents in post-harvest soil. also slightly increased OC content, carbon stock & carbon accumulation in soil in post harvest soil.
