A field experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barishal (Non–Calcareous Grey Floodplain Soil under AEZ 13) during November 2019 to June 2020 to develop nutrient management package for chilli in the southern region of Bangladesh. The crop variety was BARI Marich 2. Poultry manure was applied with chemical fertilizers. There were five treatments viz. T1: Soil test base (STB) fertilizer dose for HYV, T2: STB + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure, T3: 50% STB + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure, T4: FRG’2018 for HYV (100-60-100-20-2-1 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha-1) and T5: Absolute control which were replicated for four times. Poultry manure along with chemical fertilizers had significant influence on plant height, root length, shoot and root dry weight, no. of fruits plant-1, fruit yield plant1 and fruit yield ha-1 of chilli. Significantly highest dry fruit yield (7.33 t ha-1) along with root (2.12 g) and shoot dry weight (15.83 g), no. of fruits plant-1 (61.10) and yield plant-1 (152.8 g) was recorded with STB + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure which was statistically similar with the results obtained from 50% STB + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure. About 72.47% and 69.88% yield increase over absolute control treatment (T5) were recorded in STB + 5 t poultry manure (PM) ha-1 (T2) and 50% STB + 5 t PM ha-1 (T3) treatment, respectively. Therefore, 50% STB could be reduced when integrated use of poultry manure with chemical fertilizers in chilli cultivation in southern region, Barishal.

  1. To find out effect of poultry manure with chemical fertilizer on chilli production

A field experiment was carried out from November 2019 to June 2020 on Chilli at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Rahmatpur, Barishal. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. There were five treatment combinations viz. T1: Soil test base (STB) fertilizer dose for HYV, T2: STB + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure, T3: 50% STB + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure, T4: FRG’2018 for HYV (100-60-100-20-2-1 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha-1) and T5: Absolute control.The tested crop was chilli (cv. BARI Marich-2). The unit plot size was 3.0m × 4.0m. Seeds were sown in seed bed and transplanted after 30 days in field. The physical and chemical properties of the initial soil samples from experimental field were collected and analyzed following standard methods and presented. 

Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, zinc and boron were used in the form of urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Recommended fertilizer dose (BARC, 2018) for chilli (100-60-100-20-2-1 kg of N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha-1) were used. All P, K, S, Zn, B and 1/3rd amount of N were applied at the time of final land preparation and the remaining 2/3rd amount of N were applied in two equal installments at 25 and 45 days after transplanting. All the intercultural operations such as irrigation, sticking, weeding, insect control etc. were done as and when necessary. Data on yield and yield components were recorded at maturity. Chilli was harvested on 05 March to 20th June 2020.

Statistical analyses were conducted using standard statistical procedures (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) implemented in Statistix 10. The data were examined by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Differences between the treatments were determined by ANOVA, and Fisher’s protected least significant difference (LSD) was calculated at the 0.05 probability level for treatment mean comparisons.

From the above results and discussion, it can be concluded that STB + 5 t ha-1 poultry manure is optimum for chilli production in the Barishal region (Non–Calcareous Grey Floodplain Soil under AEZ 13). This is the result of first year experiment. It should be continued for the next year for confirmation of the findings.
