Effect of Residual Phosphorus of Mustard on Successive Mungbean Yield in Saline Area (2019-2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The phosphorus (P) deficiency is a well-known nutrient constraint on salt-affected soils. An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2019-20 to observe the effects of residual phosphorus on subsequent crop yield and find out the best dose of phosphorus in mungbean production in saline soil. There were five treatments viz. In case of mustard; T₁ stand for Recommended Dose of Fertilizer (RDF) except Phosphorus (P), T₂ stand for RDF and 100% P, T₃ stand for RDF and 25 % P, T₄ stand for RDF and 50% P and T₅ stand for RDF and 75% P. The highest seed yield of mustard per hectare was obtained from T₂ (RDF and 100% P) of 1.53 t seed yield per hectare followed by T₅(RDF and 75 % P) gave 1.41t of seed yield per hectare. However the lowest seed yield of mustard was obtained by phosphorus untreated plot. Result on mungbean will be reported in coming central review.

Objectives:

To observe the effects of residual phosphorus on subsequent crop yield and find out the best dose of phosphorus in mungbean production in saline soil.

Methodology:

Experimental site and design:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2019-2020 to observe the effects of residual phosphorus on subsequent crop yield and find out the best dose of phosphorus in pulse production in saline soil. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ -13. The land topography was medium low. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture with pH 6.78.

There were five treatments viz. In case of mustard, T₁ stand for Recommended Dose of Fertilizer (RDF) except Phosphorus (P), T₂ stand for RDF and 100% P, T₃ stand for RDF and 25% P, T₄ stand for RDF and 50% P and T₅ stand for RDF and 75 % P. In case of pulse crop field, RDF except P was applied in all treatments. The crop variety were BARI Shorisha-14 and BARI Mung-6. The experiment was laid in RCB design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4 m × 4.1 m. Data on yield and yield components of mustard were recorded and analysed statistically using MSTAT-C program. Data on mungbean field has already been collected and will be analysed soon and reported in coming central review.

Field measurement of soil salinity

Soil salinity at different dates was recorded at 09:00-10:30 a.m. every 15 days interval, starting from sowing until harvest. The salinity was measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data were taken at the middle of the plot. Collected data were analysed using ANOVA procedure. Once a week, a calibration for the meter was made by comparing with laboratory data and results.

Seed sowing & crop management:

The RDF assigned experimental plots were fertilized with 250-85-150-5-10 kg/ha urea, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Half of N and all other fertilizers were applied as basal and remaining N was top dressed at pre- flowering stage (20-22 DAE). Due to unexpected rainfall, seeds of mustard were sown on 29 December, 2019 following row to row distance of 30 cm whereas seeds of mungbean were sown on 22 March, 2020. Three irrigations were applied during the growing period. Weeding was done at 14 days after sowing followed by thinning to keep plant to plant distance of 10 cm. Disease and insect pests were always well controlled using suggested applies (BARI, 2014). The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

In summary, it is concluded that phosphorus application can affect the growth, yield and plant characters of mustard. The supplemental phosphorus is important macronutrient to control phosphorus deficiency in high and medium lands in coastal saline region. The seed yield of mustard (cv. BARI Sarisha-14) increased markedly due to phosphorus application into the soil at the rules recommended dose of fertilizer and 100% Phosphorous. Residual effect of phosphorus on mungbean will be reported in coming central review.
