An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2016-2017 to know the effect of different levels of nitrogen and foliar application of boron on mustard. There were three nitrogen levels (N1 = 90 kg N ha-1, N2 = 120 kg N ha-1 & N3 = 150 kg N ha-1) and four foliar applications of boron (B1 = Foliar application of Boron in pre-flowering stage, B2 = Foliar application of Boron in flowering stage & B3 = Foliar application of Boron in grain filling stage). Foliar dose of Boron was 4 g liter-1. The highest seed yield (1.54 t ha-1) was recorded in N3B1 and lowest seed yield was 1.33 t ha-1 in N1B1. Economic analysis shows that highest gross margin (29320 Tk. ha-1) as well as highest BCR (1.73) was obtained from N3B1 treatment (150 kg N ha-1 with foliar application of Boron in pre-flowering stage). The lowest level of soil salinity was recorded in sowing time (3.32 dS m-1) in N1B2 and the highest level of salinity (10.38 dS m-1) was recorded in N1B1 at the harvesting stage.

To determine the effect of different levels of nitrogen and foliar application of boron on mustard.

Experimental site and design: The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2016-2017 to know the effect of different levels of N and foliar application of B on mustard. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ-13. The land topography was medium low. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture with pH 6.8. There were three nitrogen levels (N1 = 90 kg N ha-1, N2= 120 kg N ha-1 & N3= 150 kg N ha-1) and three foliar applications of boron (B1 = Foliar application of Boron in pre-flowering stage, B2 = Foliar application of Boron in flowering stage & B3 = Foliar application of Boron in grain filling stage). Foliar dose of Boron was 4 g liter-1. The crop variety was BARI mustard-14. The experiment was laid out in RCB design  with  three  replications. Unit plot size was 3 m × 1.2 m. At every 7 days interval soil salinity (dS m-1) was measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data on yield and yield components were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C program. Seed sowing & crop management: The experimental plots were fertilized with 170-85-150 kg ha-1 TSP, MoP and Gypsum, respectively. All the fertilizers were applied as basal except urea. Seeds were sown in 01 December, 2016 in row to row distance of 30 cm. Three irrigations were applied during the growing period. Weeding was done at 14 days after sowing followed by thinning to keep plant to plant distance of 10 cm. Disease and insect pests were always well controlled using suggested applies (BARI, 2014). The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

In coastal saline area, mustard should be treated with 150 kg N ha-1 together with foliar application of B (4 g liter-1) in pre-flowering stage to have a better yield (1.54 t ha-1) with higher economic return (BCR 1.73).
