The study was conducted at Irrigation and Water Management research field, BARI, Gazipur during summer season of 2015 to screen out water- logged tolerant chilli variety/line and to find out the critical stages of summer chilli to water-logged condition. A factorial field experiment was carried out as a randomized complete block design with eight treatments replicated thrice. The treatments consisted of two durations of water-logged levels, I1 (8 hours) and I2 (12 hours) at flowering and fruit setting stages of summer chilli. Four varieties/lines were, V1: BARI Morich-1, V2: BARI Morich-2, L1: C-517and L2: C-590. The results showed that the summer chilli plant was found more sensitive to water-logging at flowering stage (34 days after planting). Among the varieties and lines, the line L1 (C-517) produced better fruit yield while the variety, V2 (BARI Morich-2) produced significantly lowest fruit yield when water-logged level was I1 (8 hours) and I2 (12 hours). The marketable fruit yield was obtained similar to L1 (C-517) and V1 (BARI Morich-1). L1produced around 565.8, and 432.5 kg/ha and V1 produced 669.6, and 675.4 kg/ha, respectively, while the lowest yields were obtained as 256.2 kg/ha and 264.5 kg/ha from V2 (BARI Morich-2) when water-logged level was I1 (8 hours) and I2 (12 hours), respectively. However, the line L1 (C-517) showed better performance than the other varieties and lines. This is an ongoing study, after 2 or 3 crop cycles, the conclusion can be drawn.

(i) find out the water-logged tolerant summer chilli variety/line among the promising varieties or lines, and

(ii) identify the critical stages of summer chilli variety or line to water-logged conditions.

Experimental site:

The experiment was carried out at the research field of Irrigation and Water Management Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute in Gazipur during the Kharif-1season of May-August, 2015. The soils were silt clay loam with an average field capacity of 28.5% and mean bulk density of 1.48 g/cm3.

Experimental design and treatments:

A factorial field experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with eight treatments replicated thrice. The treatments  consisted of two water logged levels and four varieties/lines (Fig. 2). Two water-logged levels were: (i) I1: Water-logged conditions for 8 hours and (ii) I2: Water-logged conditions for 12 hours. Four chilli plant materials were V1: BARI Morich-1, V2: BARI Morich-2 and two lines L1: C-517, and L2: C-590.

Crop management:

The standard agronomic practices were done as per requirements during the experimental period. The unit plot size was 8 square meter (4 m × 2 m). Seedlings were planted at the spacing of 50 cm × 50 cm. The row to row distance was 50 cm and plant to plant spacing was 50 cm. Four varieties of summer chilli were planted on 3 May 2015 and 10 May 2016. Seedlings were planted manually by hand. The age of the seedlings was 35 days in 2015 and 2016. Seedlings were watered after transplanting. Gap filling of seedling was with healthy seedlings previously planted in the border area. Irrigation treatments were done after plant establishment. The recommended dose of fertilizer was applied in the form of urea (210 kg/ha), triple supper phosphate (300 kg/ha), muriate of potash 200 (kg/ha), gypsum (110 kg/ha), zinc sulfate (3 kg/ha) and borax (3 kg/ha) (FRG 2012). Decomposed cowdung (5 t/ha) was applied before land preparation. Half of the quantity of decomposed cowdung was applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of cowdung, the entire quantity of triple supper phosphate and one third of urea and potash were applied during pit preparation. The rest of urea and potash was applied in two equal splits at 25 and 50 days after transplanting (DAP). Adequate plant protection measures were taken at initial and vegetative stages to prevent insect and disease infestation.

Yield contributing parameters and fruit yield:

The percentage of damaged and survived plant from each plot was recorded. Crop phenological data like  days to 1st flowering, days to 60% flowering, days to 1st fruit setting and days to 60% fruit setting was measured during crop cultivation. When the green fruits became matured, chilli fruits were harvested. Harvesting was done only one time on 1st July in 2015 due to damage of all plants. Randomly four plants from each plot were selected to collect the  yield contributing parameters like , length and diameter of chillies, number and weight of marketable and cull fruits per plant.  Fruit yield per plot and fruit yield per hectare were recorded after final harvest.

Data analysis:

Data on damaged and survived  plants, crop phonological parameters, yield contributing parameters and fruit yield were statistically analyzed to test the effects of waterlogged levels and varieties using R software version 3.1.2. All the treatment means were analyzed following randomized complete block factorial design with three replications and compared for any significant differences among the treatments using R-statistical models at 5% probability level.

1.   Budget:

The line L1(C-517) showed better performance among the varieties/lines and it seems to be a promising line in summer season. The line could produce better number of fruits, fruit weight per plant and fruit yield under water logged conditions upto 8-12 hours. This is an ongoing study, after further study , the conclusions can be made.
