Management of White Mold Diseases of Lettuce (2015 - 2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the pot house of Plant Pathology Division BARI, Gazipur during 2015-16 with seven treatments. The control treatment gave the highest (72.58) percent of disease severity of white mold diseases whereas the lowest (21.55) percent of disease severity was observed from the Rovral treatment. In the case of no. of the leaf, there was no significant difference among the treatments. In contrast, among the treatments, there was no significant variation of the height of the plant over the control except mustard oil cake. Among the treatments use of Rovral for a foliar spray of fifteen days of interval gave satisfactory results to reduce the white mold disease of lettuce.

Objectives:

The study was under taken to find the effective management practices of white mold diseases of lettuce.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the pot house of plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur during the 2015-16 cropping seasons. The CRD was used with three replications. Each pot soil was inoculated with Sclerotinia sp. grown on wheat grain colonized with @ 15 g/pot before 30 days of seed sowing. BARI lettuce-1, the seedling was used as planting material in this experiment which was supplied by seed technology Division. Seven treatments were used such as T₁= Mustard oil cake in the soil @ 0.5 t/ha before 20 days of planting, T₂= Neem oil cake (2.5kg/ha), T₃= Poultry refuse(6t/ha) T₄= Tricho–compost (2.5kg/ha), T₅=. Rovral (0.2%), T₆ =Thining leaf, and T₇ =Control. Intercultural operations were done as and where needed. The pots were inspected regularly to observe the white mold disease symptoms as well as the appearance of white mycelium. The severity rating scale used was 0 = non-infected, 1 = 1 to 10%, 2 = 11 to 25%, 3 = 26 to 50%, 4 = 51 to 75%, 5 = 76 to 99%, and 6 = 100% diseased tissue. Data were recorded on Disease incidence, Disease reduction over control, length of leaf/ plant, Height/plant and total leaf/ plant, seed/ plant. Data were analyzed for ANOVA and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using MSTAT-C program to compare the means for all phases of the Experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

The control treatment gave the highest (72.58) percentage of disease severity of white mold disease whereas the lowest (21.55) percentage of disease severity was observed from the Rovral treatment. Moreover, 29.25% and 35.55 % disease severity was recorded from the thinning treatment and Neem oil cake treatment, respectively. Besides, more or less the same leaf numbers were recorded from the Mustard oil cake, Poultry refuse, Tricho–compost treatments. This figure was almost up to 50%. On the other hand, the disease reduction over control is 59.69 % in thining leaf treatments and 70.30 % in Rovral treatment. On the contrary, the lowest (18.23%) disease reduction figure was recorded in Mustard oil cake too. In the case of a number of leaves, the highest 253.3 number of leaves was observed from mustard oil cake while the control treatment was the lowest (193). However, there was no significant difference among the treatments. Moreover, 5.5 cm leaf length was observed in mustard oil cake and 3.6 cm leaf length was observed in control treatments. In contrast, among the treatments, there was no significant variation of the height of plant over the control except mustard oil cake. Among the treatments use of Rovral for foliar spray at 15 days of interval gave satisfactory results to reduce the white mold disease of lettuce.
