Effect of Deficit Irrigations on Mustard on Strip Tillage Seeding System (2018–2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, during the rabi season of 2018-2019. Four irrigation treatments were assigned like I₁= Irrigation at 20 DAE, I₂= Irrigation at (20 + 40) DAE, I₃= Irrigation at (20 + 60) DAE, and Irrigation at I₄= (20+40+60) DAE to find out the effect of deficit irrigation and strip tillage performance on mustard. The yield of mustard was significantly varied with irrigation scheduling. Maximum yield was obtained at full irrigation conditions where 220 mm water was used at (20+40+60) DAE and suitable deficit irrigation schedule is irrigation at (20 + 40) DAE where scarifying 20% grain yield on strip-tillage seeding system. It is clear that available moisture is essential for the mustard crop through its life cycle.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of deficit irrigation and strip tillage performance on mustard.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, during rabi season of 2018-2019. The experimental site was a silty clay loam having a field capacity of 29%, permanent wilting point at 13% and bulk density of 1.45 g cm-³. Four irrigation treatments were assigned like I₁= Irrigation at 20 DAE, I₂= Irrigation at (20 + 40) DAE, I₃= Irrigation at (20 + 60) DAE and I₄= Irrigation at (20+40+60) DAE. Seed of BARI Sharisha-17 was sown in the unit plots of size were 10 × 10 m by BARI developed strip tillage seeding machine and maintained 40cm distance between two rows. In strip-till system, rotating blades were reduced to 24 numbers where 4 blades in face to face configuration remain in the gang at the front position of seed furrow opener for tilling in strip 4cm to 6 cm and creating tilt soil just in front of furrow openers and between the two furrow openers the soil remained untilled. Strip tillage seeding system which employs tilling the soil just in front of furrow opener and place seed, and fertilizer in line or bed at maintain right depth in a single operation just after T-aman rice harvest to utilize the residual soil moisture. Seed and fertilizer placement in strip 5cm to 7 cm; strip width 4cm to 6 cm. T-aman rice residue was also used and maintain height of 20-25 cm. At the sowing condition, soil moisture was recorded 30 – 32%. Seeds were sown on 29 November 2018 and harvested on 14 February 2019 (I₁), 18 February 2019 (I₃), 23 February 2019 (I₂) and 25 February 2019 (I₄). All the agronomic practices were carried out uniformly. The grain yield was recorded after harvest from unit plot size 5 × 5 m. Data were analyzed by using R software. SMD was determined by estimating soil moisture content. For this purpose soil samples were taken from the effective root-zone of the mustard which is 0 – 75 cm. The root-zone was divided into 3 sections viz., 0-15, 15-30 and 30-45cm. Soil samples were collected from these 3 sections with the help of an Augur. The fresh weight of the soil sampled was recorded immediately with the help of a portable weighing balance. After weighed, the samples were stored in a soil sampling core which was then placed in an electric oven for 24h at 105°C. The dry weight of the samples was recorded after oven dry.

Achievement/Findings:

From the result, it may be concluded that mustard gives the highest yield at full irrigation conditions and yield was reduced at deficit irrigation conditions. Suitable deficit irrigation schedule is irrigation at (20 + 40) DAE. This is the first-year experiment. So, the experiment should be continued for final conclusion.
