Design and Development of Prilled Urea Applicator for Up-land Crops (2019-2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fertilizer deep placement (FDP) is a proven technology for growing different crops all over the world. FDP is more effective than the traditional method (surface broadcasting) of applying fertilizer across a field. Keeping this aspect in mind an experiment was executed at the research field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Rahmatpur, Barishal during last Rabi season (2019-20) to develop prilled urea applicator for increasing fertilizer use efficiency and to increase crop production with saving of fertilizer and environment pollution with three treatments (T₁: Prilled urea broadcasting (Farmers’ Practice), T₂: Prilled urea deep placement by applicator and T₃: N, P, K deep placement by applicator). The design of the experiment was randomize complete block (RCBD) with three replications. The variety of potato was BARI alu 73. The fertilizer use efficiency of urea was more in deep placement treatments than broadcasting. The highest yield was found (22.41 t/ha) at T₃ treatment followed by T₂ (19.5 t/ha) and T₁ (18.5 t/ha). The yield increase percentage was higher in deep placement treatments (T₃: 21.13% and T₂: 5.4%) than broadcasting of urea. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was greater in T₃ (1.37) and T₂ (1.16) than T₁ (0.96). For Brinjal the highest (8.48 kg/plot) yield was found in T₃ treatment, the second highest (7.85 kg/plot) yield was found in T₂ treatment and the lowest (7.01 kg/plot) yield was observed in T₁ treatment for 2^nd harvest of yield.The highest (2.78 kg/plot) yield was found for Chili in T₃ treatment, the second highest (2.61 kg/plot) yield was found in T₂ treatment and the lowest (2.45 kg/plot) yield was observed in T₁ treatment for 2^nd harvest.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of RARS, BARI, Rahmatpur, Barishal during the Rabi season 2019-20 to evaluate the following objectives. The site is under the Ganges tidal flood plain and at 22.42?N latitude and 90.23?E longitude. The soil of the experimental plot was silt loam with pH varying from 6.25 to 6.8. The test crops were potato,brinjal and chili.

Experimental Design

The design of the experiment was RCB and the treatments were given below:

T₁ = Prilled urea broadcasting (Farmers’ Practice)

T₂ = Prilled urea deep placement by applicator

T₃ = N, P, K deep placement by applicator

There were four replications. Total experimental land size was 238 m² containing unit plot size 20 m². The first weeding was done manually at 15 days after planting and next weeding was done when it was necessary to keep the field free from weeds. Sex pheromone trap was used there for controlling the insect invasion. The experimental plots were surrounded by nets for protecting the plants from birds invasion. Five plants from each plot were selected randomly for collecting data. Yield data was collected from whole of the plot. The collected data were analyzed using R software.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the fertilizer use efficiency and yield was increased remarkably for N, P, K deep placement by applicator based on farmer practice. 20-30% yield was increased and about 40% fertilizer use efficiency increased.
