Performance Evaluation of Power Operated Seeder in Southern Region of Bangladesh (2019-2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Power operated seeders (POS) were demonstrated in different locations at farmers’ fields of Rajbari, Faridpur, Barishal, Jhalkathi, Patuakhali and at the research farm of Regional Agriculture Research station (RARS), Barishal during 2019–2020. The seeders were used for seeding operation utilizing the soil moisture after harvesting Boro rice along with the use of Hi-speed Rotary Tiller (HSRT). They maintained uniform seeding depth, uniform seed distribution and better seed soil contact in soil to seed quickly for enhance better plant establishment and yield. POS was able to complete seeding and laddering operation in a single pass with an average field capacity of 0.16 ha/h. The yields of cowpea (1.5 t/ha) under POS and conventional systems (1.42 t/ha) had no significant difference. Similar responses were also obtained from mung bean with 2.83 t/ha and 2.77 t/ha, respectively, for POS and conventional systems. But significantly higher yields of mustard (1.71 t/ha), lentil (1.82 t/ha), wheat (4.11 t/ha), black cumming (1.27) and Coriander (1.42 t/ha) were found for POS over conventional method. The POS covered127.67 ha area under different adaptive trials and field demonstrations in seven districts of Bangladesh.

b) To evaluate the performance of power operated seeder for different Rabi crops

Methodology:

Power operated seeders were used for planting wheat, mungbean, lentil, maize, sesame, and T. Aman rice directly in the farmers field of Rajbari, Faridpur (OFRD), Barishal area and on station trial in RARS, Barishal 2019-20. The seeder acts as seeding in line, and seed covering at a time. Improved inclined plate seed meter was used for seeding small to large size seeds. Different plate (12cm dia steel plate with 28 equal cell and 12cm dia with 9 cell) used for convenient planting operation. The metering plates are interchangeable and allow minimum tile to change one plate to another. Under this programme, PTOS demonstrated in different locations to show its efficient work performance in rice-wheat cropping system. After rice harvest, Mungbean, Mustard, Cowpea, Black seed, Onion, Maize seeded directly after one pass tillage operation by High speed rotary tiller. Recommended doses fertilizers were broadcasted before seeding operation.

Achievement/Findings:

Power operated seeder performed seeding operation efficiently in one pass.Uniform depth of seeding and better seed soil contact which transfer soil moisture to the seed quickly for better germination.Three crops can be fitted easily in existing rice based cropping system reducing the turnaround time 15 days for southern region of Bangladesh. Crop diversification can be achieved planting various pulse crops as well as other Robi-crops (wheat, Maize, Mung bean, Lentil, Rice, Sesame etc).
