Current vegetable seedling transplanting method is manual that means need to make a hole in the soil then put the seedling at the proper depth and finally fill-up the hole. All of these works are laborious, time-consuming, and costly. Three-dimensional projection of the transplanter was drawn in SolidWorks 2018. A power tiller operated vegetable seedling transplanter was designed and fabricated with locally available iron materials at Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 2019-20. The transplanter consisted of dibbler, dibbler pressing sprocket, chain, press wheel, seat, depth adjusting wheel, etc.  The machine can transplant seedling two rows at a time and distance between the rows is adjustable up to 40-100 cm.  Seedling to seedling distance is adjustable 20 – 125 cm. It has an irrigation facility to supply water in the row for recovering the initial stress of transplanted seedling. The transplanter was tested for the evaluation of field performance with brinjal and there was no problem in growth and found the same yield as transplanted by hand. Average field capacity of the vegetable transplanter was 20 decimal/h. The experiment will be continued in the next year for better field performance.

Objectives

  1. To design and develop a power tiller operated vegetable seedling transplanter
  2. To test and performance evaluation of the vegetable transplanter

A power tiller operated vegetable seedling transplanter was designed and fabricated at Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during 2019-20. Three-dimensional projection of the transplanter was drowned by Solid works 2018. Then fabrication was done according to design and locally available materials were used to fabricate the machine. The schematic views of the transplanter are shown. This year we modified different parts of the machine, weight adjusting wheel is additionally added to maintain the weight and balance of the machine. Last year the larger sprocket position was in the front side of the machine shown. Now changed to the backside for accurate hole making where seedling to be transplanted.

Working principle:

The transplanter is attached with a power tiller. When power tiller moves forward, chain and sprocket of transplanter should be moved in the same direction because it was connected with a wheel shaft of power tiller. This chain and sprocket used to transfer the power from power tiller wheel shaft to transplanter larger sprocket shaft, and at the same time increase the speed in larger sprocket 1.81 times due to change the teeth number because there is another small sprocket, then the forward speed of power tiller wheel and sprocket would be the same. The diameter of the sprocket is 34.5cm to press the dibbler and make a hole in the soil. Two labor are needed (two rows seedling at a time) to put the seedling at the proper depth in the hole. After placing the seedling, the press wheels press to cover the hole with soil.

Major parts of vegetable transplanter:

Dibbler:

Dibbler is an important part of vegetable transplanter is shown. It is attached to the chain and uses to make a hole in the soil. It has a flange, spring, beat point, etc.  There are two sprockets attached with chain, one is a large size and another is small size. The large size sprocket press on dibbler and beat point come to contact with soil and enter into it. The flange of dibbler is used to maintain the depth of the hole. Spring used for releasing pressure after making a hole in the soil.

Field experiments:

Experiments were conducted at the Farm Machinery & Postharvest Process Engineering Divisional research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during the rabi season (winter) of 2019-20.  The machine was tested at brinjal field. The treatments were T1- Manual transplanting & T2- Transplanting by vegetable transplanter. This is very common method to apply the fertilizer by broadcasting at 10 DAT and 50 DAT for brinjal.

A power tiller operated vegetable seedling transplanter has been designed and developed for the farmer to reduce the labor, cost, and drudgery in vegetable seedling transplanting.  The average depth of placement was 3.25 cm. It can maintain a uniform distance between seedling to seedling. There were no statistical differences in yield and yield contribution parameters of Brinjal in both treatments. The average field capacity of the vegetable transplanter  was 20 decimal/h (depending on the operator and the crop). Due to time constraints, this year the machine could not be tested large scale in the field. Thus the experiment will be continued for the next year.
