Evaluation of Jackfruit Germplasm (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fourteen jackfruit germplasm viz., AH Joy-039(2), AH Joy-073(2), AH Joy-074(1), AH Joy-074(3), AH Joy-099, AH Joy-115, AH Joy-202, AH Joy-203, AH Joy-208, AH Joy-209, AH Joy-212, AH Joy-215, AH Joy-217 and AH Joy-218 were evaluated to identify the superior ones at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2018-19. Wide range of diversity was manifested in the tree characters, number of fruits per plant, fruit characters and pulp characters of jackfruit. Maximum plant height was recorded to be 7.2 m in AH Joy-208 and minimum plant height in AH Joy-115 (3.8 m). Base girth ranged from 56 in AH Joy -039 (2) to 150 cm in AH Joy -074 (3). Trunk height varied from 0.6 to 1.8 m. Number of fruits ranged from 5 to 25. The fruit weight ranged from 2.6 to 11.35 kg. Fruit length varied from 18.5 to 49.0 cm whether diameter varied from 16.0 to 29.0 cm. Maximum and minimum bulb weights were recorded to be 7.08 in AH Joy-218 and 1.12 kg in AH Joy-039(2), respectively. Number of bulb per fruit varied from 40 in AH Joy -039 (2) to 283 in AH Joy -218. Maximum and minimum edible portion were manifested to be 59.8 and 25.5 % in AH Joy-218 and AH Joy-099, respectively. TSS was noticed to vary from 17.0 to 24.0 ^o Brix. With respect to number of fruit per plant, fruit weight, edible portion, TSS and pulp quality, the germplasm AH Joy-202, AH Joy-217, AH Joy-218 and AH Joy-115 were found auspicious.

Objectives:

The experiment has been undertaken to identification, collection and evaluation of jackfruit germplasm.

Methodology:

Collected jackfruit germplasm were planted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur in 2008 for ex-situ evaluation. Planting distance was maintained as 5 x 5 m. Design was nil. Tree and fruit characteristics of jackfruit germplasm were evaluated as per descriptor of jackfruit published by International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI, 2000). Data on number of fruits per plant and fruit characteristics were recorded during the harvesting period of 2019.

Achievement/Findings:

With respect to the number of fruit per plant, fruit weight, edible portion, TSS and pulp quality, the germplasm AH Joy-202, AH Joy-217, AH Joy-218 and AH Joy-115 were found auspicious. The experiment will be continued for further evaluation. Among these superior germplasm, AH Joy-202 is the best in size and shape of fruit, bulb weight, pulp colour, sweetness etc. which might be released as variety.
