Variety and Species
The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of the Horticulture Research Centre under Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during July, 2018 to July, 2019. Saplings of three jackfruit varieties were planted in July, 2018. Characteristics of three jackfruit varieties were described below-
BARI Kanthal-1: A regular bearing high yielding jackfruit variety which is harvested during Mid May to June; The average weight of a fruit is 9.5 Kg, fruit shape is oval and edible portion is 55%, fruit pulp is light yellow having pleasant flavor, juicy, medium soft and TSS (22o Brix).
BARI Kanthal-2: An off-season regular bearing jackfruit variety which is harvested during the month of January to April. The average weight of a fruit is 6.95 Kg, fruit shape is oval and edible portion is 60%, fruit pulp is light yellow having pleasant flavor, juicy, medium soft and TSS (21o Brix).
BARI Kanthal-3: A year round regular bearing jackfruit variety which is harvested during the month of September to June. Average weight of fruits is 5.43 kg, ß- Carotene- 35.06 mg/g and pulp is deep yellow and very sweet, TSS - 23.6o Brix , edible portion -52.5%.
Prior to planting saplings of jackfruit the land was ploughed with power tiller and kept open for few days. Drainage system was developed. Pit was prepared and initially 20 Kg cow dung, 400 g TSP, 200 g MoP and 50 g gypsum were incorporated with the upper soil of pit. Total number of grafted saplings was 36. Spacing was 5 X 4.5 m. Pit size was 1m x 1m x1m. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Data on plant height, base girth, number of branches and flowering were recorded, analyzed statistically and the mean separation was done following DMRT.
