Evaluation of Jackfruit Germplasm at Khagrachari (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of existing eleven jackfruit germplasm was done at fruit farm of HARS, Khagrachari during the year 2018-19 with the objective of identifying superior small sized jackfruit germplasm with high yield potential and edible qualities. Number of fruits per plant ranged from 32-95. Germplasm AH Kha-005 produced maximum number of fruits (95) followed by AH Kha-010 (84) and minimum was recorded in AH Kha-011 (32). Among the eleven jackfruit germplasm, six germplasm produced more than 50 fruits per plant indicating high yield potential. Single fruit weight ranged from 2.90-5.00. The highest individual fruit weight was recorded in AH Kha-010 (5.00 kg) and the lowest was in AH Kha-009 (2.90 kg). TSS content of the fruits varied from 18-23.3% whereas AH Kha-005 produced the highest TSS (23.3 %). The highest fruit yield was observed in AH Kha-004 (367.5 kg) and the lowest in AH Kha-009 (142.1 kg). The edible portion varied from 36.6-52.6% and AH Kha-005 showed the highest edible portion (52.6 %) followed by AH Kha-007 (52.3%) and the lowest was observed in AH Kha-008 (36.6 %).

Objectives:

The objectives to identify superior small sized jackfruit germplasm.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Hill Agricultural Research Station (HARS), Khagrachari during 2018-19 to identify superior small sized jackfruit germplasm with high yield potentiality and fruit qualities. Eleven preselected jackfruit germplasm namely AH Kha-001, AH Kha-002, AH Kha-003, AH Kha-004, AH Kha-005, AH Kha-006, AH Kha-007, AH Kha-008, AH Kha-009, AH Kha-010 and AHK-011 at the existing fruit orchard of HARS, Khagrachari having small sized fruit constitute the treatments of the experiment. Five fruits from each plant were randomly selected for collecting the individual fruit parameters and the yield per plant were calculated considering all the fruits. Fully mature fruits were harvested from the plant and data on different parameters were recorded after ripening of the fruits. Mean data were compiled and analyzed as per statistical procedure.

Considering fruit characteristics i.e, taste, juiciness, sweetness, colour of pulp, fruit number and fruit yield of germplasm, AH Kha-005 and AH Kha-007 were found to be superior small sized jackfruit germplasm.
