Evaluation of Jackfruit Germplasm (2018-2019 at Chapai Nawabganj)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out with two jackfruit germplasm namely AH Cha-001 and AH Cha-002 at RHRS, Chapai Nawabganj during the fruiting season of 2019 to know the detailed information on plant growth, fruit characteristics and yield. Between two jackfruit germplasm, the maximum tree volume was recorded in AH Cha-002 (172.47 m³) and the minimum was recorded in AH Cha-001 (152.90 m³)^.Fruit weight was maximum in AH Cha-002 (7.10kg ) while the minimum was in AH Cha-001(5.30kg).The highest yield of fruit was recorded in AH Cha-001 (265.00kg) while the lowest yield was in AH Cha-002 (56.80kg). Maximum bulb weight was noted in AH Cha-002 (44.30g) while the minimum bulb weight was noted in AH Cha-001 (40.15g) and the highest TSS (20.10%) was recorded from AH Cha-002 while minimum (18.25%) was in AH Cha-001. Diseases and insect-pests were absent in two jackfruit germplasm.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of the selected jackfruit germplasm for release as variety.

Methodology:

One jackfruit germplasm was collected from Chapai Nawabganj in 2012. Three seeds of a collected jackfruit germplasm were sown on 8 Octoer, 2012. Only two seeds were germinated successfully. So number of plant of the jackfruit germplasm were two (AHCha-001 & AHCha-002) with 7 years old. Between two plants, last year only one plant (AHCha-001) produced 6 fruits for the 1^st time and this year two germplasm produced flowering and fruiting. Cultural operations such as fertilization, weeding and irrigation were done as and when necessary. Fertilizer doses were as per recommendation (Hossain, 1989 a). Tree volume was calculated by the formula given by Castle (1983) as tree volume = 1/6×p × height × (2r)² where, 2r = (east-west + north-south canopy spread)/2, expressed in m^3. Fruits were harvested at proper maturity. Quantitative characters such as fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, no. of fruits/plant, yield/plant, seed weight, seed length, seed breadth, bulb weight, bulb length, bulb breadth, no. of bulb/fruit and TSS (%), and qualitative characters such as fruit shape, attractiveness, pulp colour, juiciness, bulb texture etc were recorded. Data on insect pests and diseases in natural conditions were also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study revealed that considering overall performances especially yield, number of fruits, fruit weight, bulb weight, no. of bulb/fruit, seed weight, harvesting time and percent TSS, the two germplasm were good. But in case of taste the germplasm AH Cha-002 was found best. As it was the 2nd year observation, the experiment should be continued.
