Characterization and Evaluation of Late Mango Germplasm (2019–2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on characterization and evaluation of late mango germplasm was conducted at the Fruit Research Station, Rajshahi during 2019-20. The experiment included only one late mango germplsm (MI Raj-002) which flowered two times in a year. First flowering occurred in the month of February in which fruits were harvested in mid-season June and the second flowering occurred in the month of May in which fruits were harvested in the late season of September. The germplasm MI Raj-002 produced 186 in number and 46 kg of fruits in the mid-season (February- June) production. In case of late-season production, the tree bore 155 in number and 27 kg of fruits. The individual fruit weight of MI Raj-002 was 270 g in the main season and 182 g in the late season (May-September, 2019). TSS percentage of main season fruit was 17 while it was 21 in late-season fruit.

Objectives:

To identify the late mango germplasm with good qualitative characters.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Fruit Research Station, Rajshahi during 2019-20. Only one Mango germplasm MI Raj-002 was included in the experiment. The germplasm MI Raj-002 was collected from Rajshahi region in 2010 through top working on seedling mango plants at Fruit Research Station, Rajshahi. The Tree was nourished properly and fertilized as per the recommendation of Hossain (1989). Intercultural operations and pant protection measures were done as and when necessary. The data on different parameters were collected as per mango descriptor followed by IPGR format.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall performance of the germplasm MI Raj-002 was satisfactory. The germplasm has the capability of two times production in a year. Fruit quality in terms of TSS% and flavor was good though it had some fibers in the pulp but it was palatable. Considering two times production and good flavor it can be considered as promising germplasm. The experiment should be carried out in the next year for further investigations.
