Effects of Date of Transplanting on the Growth Parameters of Boro Rice Varieties Under the System of Rice Intensification

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2004 to June 2005 to assess the effects of date of transplanting on growth of boro rice varieties under the System of Rice Intensification ( SRI). The experiment comprised of five transplanting dates with 15 days interval and four boro rice varieties. The result revealed that date of transplanting, significantly influence the growth parameters of boro rice. Almost all parameters showed the best performance on the transplanting date of 16 January and the lowest on December 17. The variety Jagoroni performed better in respect to LAI, tiller production, total dry matter production, CGR and NAR, where as variety Jagoroni performed better on transplanting at 16 January under the system of rice intensification.

Objectives:

To find out and develop sustainable technology of hybrid rice cultivation under the prevailing local conditions. Hence the present study was undertaken to determine the optimum transplanting date of boro rice varieties under SRI.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from November 2004 to June 2005. The experimental site was a medium high land with silt loam texture belonging to non-calcareous dark-gray flood plain soil (Agro-Ecological Zone-9) (UNDP and FAO, 1988). The PH of the soil ranged from 6.6 to 7.0. The experiment comprised five dates of transplanting viz. 17 December 2004, 01, 16 and 31 January and 15 February 2005. Four boro rice varieties (3 hybrid and 1 inbred) viz. Hira, Aftab, Jagoroni and BRRI dhan29 were used as experimental materials. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4.0 m × 2.5 m. The unit plot were fertilized with urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rates of 300, 75, 60, 28 and 5 kg ha-1, respectively (BARC, 2005). The total amounts of all fertilizers except urea were applied as basal while urea was applied in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Single seedling of fourteen days old was transplanted at 30 cm × 30 cm spacing. Different intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The data on growth parameters were recorded 25 days intervals starting from 25 DAT to 75 DAT. At each harvest, ten plants were collected from every plot. Their morphological data were recorded and then the samples were oven dried at 80° C for 72 hours to get constant dry weights. The collected data were analyzed following the ANOVAtechnique and the mean differences were adjudged by the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) using a statistical computer package MSTAT.

Achievement/Findings:

The date of transplanting significantly influenced growth parameters of boro rice under the system of rice intensification. The variety jagoroni showed the best performance regarding to LAI, tiller production, total dry matter production, CGR and NAR on 16 January transplanting.
