Collection and Evaluation of Mango Germplasm in Cumilla Region (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at RARS, Cumilla to find out the suitable mango line(s) for Cumilla region. Sixteen germplasm were collected from farmers’ orchard and household. Saplings were transplanted in the main field on 2 May, 2017.The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design. Plants are two years old and now these are in growth and flowering stage.

Objectives:

To select good mango line(s) for Cumilla region in respect of yield and quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agriculture Research Station, Cumilla during 2017 to 2019. Sixteen germplasm were collected from farmers’ orchard or household. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Saplings were planted in the main field on 2 May, 2017 with a spacing of 5 m × 5m. A single tree of each line constituted the unit of replication. The trees were fertilized as per schedule described by Hossain (1989). Fertilizers were applied twice in a year on 28 June and 30 September 2018. Other intercultural operations, such as weeding, ploughing, and mulching were done as and when necessary.

Girth of the trunk was measured at a height of 15 cm from ground level and tree volume was calculated following formula by Castle (1983) with some modifications, such as π/6 × height × (2r)²

where, 2r=(East–West+North–South canopy spread)/2. Data on plant height, canopy and flowering were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design. Plants are two years old and now these are in growth and flowering stage. Collection of germplasm is a continuous process. After completion of the experiment improved mango line(s) will be selected for variety development.
