Performance of BARI Released Mango Varieties in Chattogram Hill Tracts (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on five mango varieties viz., BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4 and BARI Aam-8 at hill valley of Hill Agricultural Research Station at Raikhali in Rangamati Hill District during 2018-19 with an objective to verify their performance. Maximum plant height (798 cm), maximum number of fruits per plant (341) and maximum fruit yield (24.8 t/ha) were observed in BARI Aam-8. Heavier fruit (421 g) and maximum edible portion (74.1%) were found in BARI Aam-4. Maximum TSS was recorded in BARI Aam-3 (21.3%). Minimum number of fruits per plant (124), minimum edible portion (64.9%) and minimum fruit yield (5.8 t/ha) were found in BARI Aam-1.

Objectives:

To observe the performance of BARI released mango varieties in Chattogram Hill Tracts.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at eleven years old mango orchard at hill valley of Hill Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati during 2018-19. Five mango varieties like BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4 and BARI Aam-8 were evaluated. The experiment was conducted with Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) maintaining 6 m × 6 m spacing. Soil was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 15 kg/plant, 230 g N, 42 g P₂O₅ and 54 g K₂O per plant per year. NPK were applied in the form of Urea, TSP and MOP, respectively. Fertilizers were applied in two equal installments in a year. First installment was applied in May and the second in September. Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation, mulching etc. were done as per requremtns. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were taken duly.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on number of fruits per plant and fruit yield with higher TSS (%), individual fruit weight, fruit volume, edible portion BARI Aam-8, BARI Aam-3 and BARI Aam-4 were superior among all other varieties under study in Chattogram Hill Tracts. BARI Aam-1 was suggested as suitable early sweet variety and BARI Aam-4 for late variety.
