Regional Yield Trial of Banana Lines (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six genotypes of banana were evaluated to select the suitable lines as well as their regional adaptability of banana at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during September 2016 to June 2019. Significantly wider variation was observed among the lines/varieties in respect of all the vegetative, yield and yield contributing characters except number of leaves at shooting. BARI Kola-1 showed the shortest plant (186.7 cm) and Dud Sagar produced the tallest plant (307.00 cm) followed by Kabri (281.30 cm). BARI Kola-1 required shortest period (332.7 days) to harvest whereas Kabri required the longest period (367.3 days) followed by Dud Sagar (356.7 days). The highest bunch weight was produced by ITC-1320 (25.11 kg) followed by BARI Kola-1 (23.45 kg) and the lowest by Dud Sagar (12.38 kg). The highest number of hands per bunch was recorded in ITC-1320 (12.00) and the lowest in Dud Sagar (8.00). The highest number of fingers per bunch was also found in ITC-1320 (203.7), whereas it was noted the lowest in Dud Sagar (109.0). The highest yield was recorded in ITC-1320 (62.79 t/ha) and the lowest yield was recorded in Dud Sagar (30.95 t/ha). The highest percentage of edible portion was recorded in Kabri (77.51) followed by ITC-1441 (74.36) and Dud Sagar (72.90). Maximum TSS was found in Kabri (33.67 %) followed by ITC-1441 (25.33 %) and minimum in ITC-570 (18.03 %).

Objectives:

To find out the regional adaptability of those germplasm/lines along with the released variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during the period from September 2016 to June 2019. Six genotypes viz. ITC-570, ITC-1320, ITC-1441, Dud Sagar, Kabri and BARI Kola-1 were included in this study, where BARI Kola-1 used as check. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Single sucker was allowed to grow before maturity of the fruit. The spacing was 2 × 2 m. Unit plot size was 4 × 4 m accommodating 4 plants. Suckers were planted in the field on 11 September 2016. The land was fertilized with cowdung @ 30t/ha and basal doses applied in the pit TSP, MP and gypsum @ 400, 200 and 200g per pit., respectively as per recommendation of Bari et al. (2005). Half of the quantity of cowdung, TSP and gypsum were applied in the field during final land preparation and the remaining halves were applied in the pit 10 days before planting. Urea and and rest half MP were applied as side dressing in four equal installments at two months interval starting from two months after planting. Weeding, desuckering and propping were done as and when necessary. Male buds were removed immediately after opening of flowers. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to April at one month interval. A fungicide Tilt 250 EC was sprayed @ 0.5 ml/L to control Sigatoka leaf spot disease of banana. Fruit characteristics were studied in the laboratory. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and analyzed statistically in the method suggested by Gomez and Gomez (1984). Means were separate by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the results obtained from the experiment, it may be concluded that the germplasm, ITC-1441, Kabri and Dud Sagar performed better in terms of yield and quality. Though the highest yield was recorded from ITC-1320 (62.79 t/ha) but its quality is very poor, because the ripen fruits are dropped out from the hands or bunch. The experiment should be repeated with the germplasm ITC 1441, Kabri and Dud sagar for more confirmation.
