Regional Yield Trial of Table Banana Grmplasm (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study to see the regional adaptability of a selected superior line MS Jes-001 with a check variety BARI Kola-3 to develop suitable table banana variety was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during November 2015 to June 2019. The germplasm MS Jes-001 produced taller plant (357.00 cm) acompared to BARI Kola-3 (340.81 cm). MS Jes-001 produced heavier bunch (21.42 kg) compared to lighter bunch in BARI Kola-3 (19.75 kg). Maximum number of fingers per bunch (246.92) was recorded in MS Jes-001 and minimum number of fingers was recorded in BARI Banana-3 (186.53). BARI Kola-3 resulted in maximum finger weight (112.97g) as compared to minimum finger weight in MS Jes-001 (87.23g). The average finger length of MS Jes-001 (12.44 cm) was higher than that of BARI Kola-3 (11.34 cm). The average higher fruit yield was noted from MS Jes-001 (53.55 t/ha) compared to lower yield in BARI Kola-3 (49.35 t/ha).

Objectives:

To see the regional adaptability of a selected superior line MS Jes-001 with a check variety BARI Kola-3 and to develop suitable table banana variety

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during the period from November 2015 to June 2019. The genotype MS Jes-001 and BARI Kola-3 were included in this study, where BARI Kola -3 was used as check. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with seven replications. Single sucker was allowed to grow at the time of shooting. The spacing was 2 × 2 m. Unit plot size was 4 × 4 m accommodating 4 plants. Suckers were planted in the field on 17 March 2017. The land was fertilized with cowdung @ 20t/ha and urea, TSP, MoP and gypsum @ 650, 500, 450 and 200 kg per hectare, respectively as per recommendation of Bari et al. (2005). Half of the quantity of cowdung, TSP and gypsum were applied in the field during final land preparation and the remaining halves were applied in the pit 10 days before planting. Urea and MoP were applied as side dressing in four equal installments at two months interval starting from two months after planting. Weeding, desuckering and propping were done as and when necessary. Male buds were removed immediately after opening of flowers. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to April at 15 days interval. A fungicide Tilt 250 EC was sprayed @ 0.5 ml/L of water to control Sigatoka leaf spot disease of banana. Fruit characteristics were studied in the laboratory. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and analyzed statistically in the method suggested by Gomez and Gomez (1984).
