Clonal Selection of Banana Cv. Amrit Sagor (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

More than five hundred AmritSagor germplasm was collected from ten different locations and planted at the research field of Regional Horticulture Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Shibpur, Narsingdi to evaluated and identify the suitable lines/variety and know regional adaptability of banana during the period from September 2017 to December 2018. This is second year evaluation fruits of only 42 lines under 10 accessions were considered for evaluation. Selected germplasm will be evaluated more precisely. Maximum number of leaves was obtained from MS Nar-005 (12.44) whereas MS Nar-042 produced the minimum leaves (8.17). MS Nar-005got the highest bunch weight (18.14 kg), number of hands per bunch(8.53) and the heaviest hands(3.11 kg). Nar-022 got the highest number of fingers per hand (18.04) whereas, MS Nar-042 got the lowest (13.67). MS Nar-005 produced the highest fruit yield (45.35 t/ha) closely followed by MS Nar-022 (43.93 t/ha) and MS Nar-017 produced the lowest yield (37.50 t/ha). MS Nar-005 exhibited the highest edible portion (77.96%). TSS was maximum in MS Nar-001 (20.12%) followed by MS Nar-017 (20.03%). MS Nar-034 exhibited the highest shelf life (8.08 days) as compared to the lowest shelf in MS Nar-040 (5.98 days).

Objectives:

To find out the regional adaptability of those germplasm/lines along with the released variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of the Regional Horticulture Research Station, BARI, Shibpur, Narsingdi during the period from September 2017 to August 2019. Six hundred twelve suckers of local Amrit Sagor were collected from 72 parents of 10 locations andwere included in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. One sucker per plant of first year crop was allowed to grow before maturity of the 1st crop. The plant debris of main crop was properly cleaned and the unit bed was prepared by raising soil to the bed. Unit plot size was 4.0 x 4.0 m accommodating 4.0 plants. Fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 10.00 kg, TSP 150.00 g, gypsum 100.00 g, MoP 100.00 g, Boron 10.00 g, ZnSO₄ 10.00 g and MgSO₄ 10.00 g per pit before planting the suckers. Urea and MoP were applied @ 875.00 and 850.00 g per plant in five equal installments starting from two months after retaining l^stratoon crop at 45 days interval. Weeding, de-suckering and pruning were done as and when necessary. Male buds were removed immediately after opening of flowers. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to May at one-month interval. A fungicide known was sprayed @ 2 g/L to control Sigatoka leaf spot disease of banana. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and analyzed by STAR computer program. Means were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the results obtained from the experiment, it may be concluded that the accession MS Nar-005, MS Nar-022 and MS Nar-030 performed better in terms of yield and yield contributing characters. This is third year evaluation selected 10 accessions were planted in a new field for further evaluation. Selected germplasm will be evaluated more precisely in the following year.
