Evaluation of Seeded Banana Germplasm at Jamalpur Region (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out for fruit characterization of seeded banana (Musa sp.) at Horticulture Research Centre, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during 2018 - 2019. Eight local germplasm viz. MS Jam-01, MS Jam-02, MS Jam-03, MS Jam-04, MS Jam-06, MS Jam-09, MS Jam-10 & MS Jam-13 and two exotic germplasm viz. MS ISD-01 & MS ISD-05 were included in the study. Significant differences were observed among all the local and exotic lines in respect of growth, flowering characters, harvesting time, yield and yield contributing characters and postharvest quality of seeded banana. The line MS Jam-10 produced the tallest plant (4.58 m) and MS Jam-13 produce the shortest plant (3.31 m). Base girth and number of leaves were found the maximum in MS Jam-01 (65.17 cm) and MS Jam-09 (8.17), respectively. The line MS Jam-02 exhibited the highest bunch weight (19.07 kg) and number of hands per bunch (11.04). The highest average weight of individual hand (2.26 kg) was found in MS Jam-01. The length and breadth of bunch were noted the maximum in the line MS Jam-01and MS Jam-10 (62.00 cm and 40.22 cm), respectively. Number of fingers per hand was noted the highest in MS Jam-02 (14.63). MS Jam-10 exhibited the biggest finger (199.87 g) as against the smallest finger in MS Jam-02 (122.96 g). The line MS Jam-02gave the maximum yield (43.88 t/ha), while MS Jam-09 exhibited the minimum yield (25.05 t/ha).

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield potential and fruit characters of the local and exotic lines of seeded banana under Jamalpur condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the fruit farm and fruit characteristics were studied in the laboratory of the Horticulture Research Centre, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during the period from January 2018 to April 2019. Eight local MS Jam-01, MS Jam-02, MS Jam-03, MS Jam-04, MS Jam-06, MS Jam-09, MS Jam-10 & MS Jam-13 and two exotic viz. MS ISD-01 & MS ISD-05 genotypes were included in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. One sucker per plant of second year crop was allowed to grow before maturity of the 2^nd year crop. The plant debris of main crop was properly cleaned and the unit bed was prepared by raising soil to the bed. Unit plot size was 4.0 x 4.0 m accommodating 4.0 plants. The ratoon suckers were trimmed in the plot at a spacing of 2.0 x 2.0 m on January 2016. Fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 10.00 kg, TSP 150.00 g, gypsum 100.00 g, MOP 100.00 g, Boron 10.00 g, ZnSO4 10.00 g and MgSO4 10.00 g per plant after trimming the suckers. Urea and MOP were applied @ 875.00 and 850.00 g per plant in five equal installments starting from two months after retaining 2^nd ratoon crop at 45 days interval. Weeding, desuckering and propping were done as and when necessary. Male buds were removed immediately after opening of flowers. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to May at one month interval. A fungicide knowin was sprayed @ 2g/L to control Sigatoka and leaf sopt disease of banana. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and measured characters were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR) and means were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The line; MS Jam-02, MS Jam-01, MS Jam-06, MS Jam-04 and MS Jam-03 gave the higher yield. Considering number of seed per finger, hardness of seed, edible portion, TSS content and shelf life MS Jam-06 and MS Jam-10 were found promising and MS Jam-06 was the best one under Jamalpur condition.
