Hybridization of BARI Peyara-2 with Sowrup Kathi Peyara (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in RHRS, Lebukhali, Dumki, Patuakhali to incorporate some important characters of Sowrup kathi peyara such as taste, soft seed and attracted fragrance into BARI Peyara-2. Three plants of each germplasm had been planted in pot with proper care in April 2018.

Objectives:

To incorporate some important characters of Sowrupkathi peyara like taste, soft seed and attracted fragrance into BARI Peyara-2.

Methodology:

Major fruits include mango, banana, papaya, jackfruit, pineapple, guava, litchi, pumelo, lemon etc. In recent years, guava became a major fruit crop of Bangladesh because of its year round availability. Many successful commercial guava orchard of BARI Peyara-2 has been established all over the country. A local cultivar Sarup kathi peyara has demand for its taste, soft seed and attracted fragrance. But Sowrupkathi peyara has some demerits. After harvesting it loses its crispiness and has very low shelf life. So considering this focal points, the study was undertaken to incorporate some important characters of Sowrupkathi peyara like taste, soft seed and attracted fragrance into BARI Peyara-2.

Collected Plants are in good condition and are in vegetative stage now. Final report will be prepared after Successful hybridization. This study will be continued.
