Evaluation of Ber Germplasm (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to identify suitable ber germplasm (Zizyphus mauritiana) at HRC Fruit Orchard, RARS, Jamalpur during 2018-2019. Thirty eight accessions were included in the study. Wide range of variation was noted regarding quantitative and qualitative fruit characters. ZM Jam-124 had maximum individual fruit weight (19 g) and ZM Jam-143 got minimum fruit weight (5.70 g). Yield per plant varied from 9.00 kg (ZM Jam-177) to 22.00 kg (ZM Jam-122 and ZM Jam-244). Edible portion varied from 85.00 % (ZM Jam-133) to 95.38 % (ZM Jam- 145). TSS was varied from 13 % (ZM Jam-232) to 22 % (ZM Jam-122, ZM Jam-145 and ZM Jam-188).

Objectives:

To collection and evaluation of promising land races will be the first and foremost task to develop high yielding varieties with desirable attributes (soury sweet taste).

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the HRC Fruit Orchard, RARS, Jamalpur during the fruiting season of 2018-19. Thirty eight accessions were used in the study. Plant to plant distance was 6 m and row to row distance was 6 m. The experimental design was without replications. Fifty fruits from each tree were randomly harvested and used for collection of data on fruit characters. 26 of quantitative and qualitative data (plant spread (N-S & E-W), plant height, base girth, flowering time, harvesting time, individual fruit weight, length and breadth of fruit, stone weight, stone length and breadth, yield per plant, % edible portion, % TSS, fruit shape, skin colour, flesh colour, crispiness, sweetness, taste and fruit surface) were recorded. Data were statistically analyzed following a programme MS Excel.

Achievement/Findings:

ZM Jam-122, ZM Jam-124, ZM Jam-127, ZM Jam-196, ZM Jam-202 , ZM Jam-223, and ZM Jam-244 showed better performance in terms of individual fruit weight, yield per plant, edible portion, TSS, crispiness, sweetness and taste. Some lines viz. ZM Jam-122, ZM Jam-124, ZM Jam-127, ZM Jam-140, ZM Jam-151, ZM Jam-178, ZM Jam-196, ZM Jam-205, ZM Jam-223, ZM Jam-239 and ZM Jam-244 showed promising characters regarding soury sweet taste which is our target. Some lines viz. ZM Jam-124, ZM Jam-169, and ZM Jam-186 showed promising characters regarding late bearing habit. Some lines viz. ZM Jam-122, ZM Jam-188, ZM Jam-223, and ZM Jam-244, showed best performance regarding organoleptic taste. The experiment will be continued in the next year.
