Evaluation of Pummelo in Hilly Region of Rangamati (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment with ten germplasm of pummelo was conducted at the existing eleven years old pummelo orchard at hill valley of Hill Agricultural Research Station of Raikhali for the evaluation of pummelo germplasm during the period of 2018-19. Germplasm of pummelo were collected from different parts of Chattogram Hill Tracts. Maximum number of fruits per plant (62) was observed in CG Rai-008 followed by CG Rai-052 (58), whereas the minimum number of fruits per plant (9) was collected from CG Rai-011. The earliest flowering (mid February) was recorded in CG Rai-006 and the latest (mid March) in CG Rai-047. Quality fruit was observed in CG Rai-006, CG Rai-009, CG Rai-047 and CG Rai-052 by organoleptic test.

Objectives:

To find out superior pummelo germplasm in Chattogram Hill Tracts to release as a new variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the existing eleven years old pummelo orchard collected from different parts of Chattogram Hill Tracts at hill valley of Agricultural Research Station of Raikhali in Rangamati Hill District during the period of 2018-19. Ten germplasm viz., CG Rai-006, CG Rai-007, CG Rai-008, CG Rai-009, CG Rai-010, CG Rai-011, CG Rai-047, CG Rai-048, CG Rai-052 and CG Rai-053 were included in this study. Spacing was maintained 5 m × 5 m. Soil was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 15 kg/plant, 230g N, 185 g P₂O₅ and 300g K₂O per plant per year. NPK were applied in the form of Urea, TSP and MOP, respectively in three equal installments in a year. First installment was applied during February, second in May and the last in October. Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation, pruning etc were done as per necessary. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were taken duly.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the edible portion (%), TSS (%), bitterness, organoleptic test and colour, germplasm CG Rai-006, CG Rai-009, CG Rai-047 and CG Rai-052 were found to be superior germplasm which can be evaluated for next year to draw a conclusion.
