Evaluation of Mandarin Germplasm in Controlled Condition Under Net House (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Citrus Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jaintapur, Sylhet with six mandarin germplasm/lines viz., CR Jai-011, CR Jai-013, CR Jai-014, CR Jai-015, CR Jai-016 and CR Jai-018 along with BARI Komala-3 as a check to find out suitable lines with higher yield and quality. A wide variation was observed in respect of yield and yield contributing characteristics. Maximum number of fruits per plant (25) was found in CR Jai-018 and the highest yield per plant (4 kg) was found in CR Jai-015. The haviest fruit was found in CR Jai-015 (200.45 g) with large fruit size (6.9 cm × 8.1 cm). No seeds were found in CR Jai-014. Edible portion and per cent total soluble solid were recorded maximum in CR Jai-015 by 79.16 % and 13.8 % respectively but titratible acidity (TA) was found the lowest in CR Jai-015 (0.72 %). Fruit surface was found smooth in BARI Komala-3 and CR Jai-015 whereas, others germplasm beard pitted skin. Strong adherence of albedo to pulp was found in CR Jai-014, whereas others were medium to weak.

Objectives:

To develop more varieties for increasing demand day by day

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Citrus Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jaintapur, Sylhet (25.13562º N latitude, 92.13217 º E longitude, and 36m of elevation from mean sea level). Six mandarin germplasms were used as study material along with BARI Kamola-3 as check. The experiment was set at 60 mesh net house in 18" diameter mud tub. The tub was filled with soil and FYM (1:1) along with 100 g of TSP and 20 g of Gypsum. The chemical fertilizer, Urea (30 g) and MoP (20 g) were top dressed in every month for better growth of the plants. Every year top soil upto 5cm of each tub was replaced by new growing media (Soil:FYM=1:1). The plants were irrigated regularly for proper flowering and fruit setting. No insect invasion was observed during the fruiting period. Shooty mould was observed during the growing period which was controlled by spraying tilt @1ml/L after 10 days intervals. Mature fruits were collected from the plants on second week of December. Nine fruits from each plant were harvested randomly for data collection on individual fruit weigh (g), fruit size (length and diameter at equatorial region), segments per fruit, seeds per fruit, seed weight per fruit, rind weight, percent juice content, total soluble solids (TSS), titratible acidity (TA). Total soluble solids content (TSS) was measured with the help of refracto-meter and corrected with temperature factor (Sherwood, 1928). By titrating 10 ml juice with 1% NaOH titratible acidity (TA) was measured (Hardy and Sanderson, 2010). All the recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C programme and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test was performed for mean separations and interpretation of results (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

From the above study, germplasm CR Jai-015 may be selected to propose for releasing as a variety in terms of fruit quality and quantitative characteristics.
