Survey, Collection and Evaluation of Papaya Germplasm for Papaya Hybrid Development (virus Resistance and Trait Improvement) (2019–2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the research field of Pomology Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur to evaluate the collected Papaya germplasm and varieties against PRSV and PMV as well as their fruit traits for variety development. In this study, sixteen Papaya germplasm were evaluated to PRSV and PMV and found that the lines CP Joy-022, CP Joy-005, CP Joy-017, CP Joy-009, CP Joy-003, CP Joy-001, CP Joy-023 and Toplady showed complete resistance against PRSV and PMV. On the contrary, germplasm Jayantlady, Shahi Papaya, Babu, Badsha, CP Joy-024 and CP Joy-025 showed partial resistance, whereas higher disease incidence was observed in CP Joy-026. The complete resistant lines/varieties could be used to develop virus-resistant variety considering other fruit traits in the future breeding program. Further evaluation is needed including more germplasm to show the efficacy of tolerance against PRSV and PMV.

Objectives:

The study has been undertaken i) to determine the disease incidence for the selected cultivars, ii) to identify the resistant cultivars for their genetic resistance, and iii) to develop resistant cultivars following conventional breeding methods.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Pomology Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur. Sixteen Papaya germplasm were collected from Rangpur, Pabna, Natore and our own germplasm of Pomolgy Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur. The seeds of the Papaya genotypes were sowed on December 25^th 2019 and developed seedlings were transplanted on March 1^st, 2020 following RCBD design with three replications. Plant to plant distance was 2 m and row to row distance was 2 m. Cultural management: The regular cultural management such as irrigation, weeding, fertilization, bamboo staking was done as per requirement. Virus evaluation: After three months, Papaya ringspot virus and Papaya mosaic virus infection was observed in few lines of the genotypes. Gradually the virus infection was disseminated over the field day by day. Data were recorded weekly by evaluating the visual symptoms developed on the leaves. Afterward, the data were converted to percentage to categorize the disease's severity.

Achievement/Findings:

The lines CP Joy-022, CP Joy-005, CP Joy-017, CP Joy-009, CP Joy-003, CP Joy-001, CP Joy-023 and Toplady could be used as parent materials for variety development. Further evaluation is needed including more germplasm to show the efficacy of tolerance against PRSV and PMV.
