Inter-specific Hybridization in Cultivated Papaya (2019–2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the experimental field of Pomology Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur to develop superior Papaya hybrids considering different qualitative and quantitative traits, which would fascinate the consumers demand and attention. In this study, 11 crossing combinations were made among some popular variety and lines collected from different sources such as private company (Supreme Seed, ACI and Lalteer), farmer’s field and previously collected germplasm. The experiment is going on and till to date, 42 flowers have been emasculated and pollinated between Toplady x Shahi Papaya (6), Jayantlady x Shahi Papaya (7), Badsha x Shahi Papaya (3), Shahi Papaya x Toplady (4), Shahi Papaya x Jayantlady (5), Shahi Papaya x Badsha (5), CP Joy-022 x Toplady (2), CP Joy-022 x Jayantlady (3), CP Joy-022 x Badsha (2), CP Joy-022 x Pabna 2 (2) and CP Joy-022 x CP Joy-025 (3). The best F₁ hybrid will be released as variety after evaluating the expected qualitative and quantitative traits from these combinations.

Objectives:

The aim of this study was therefore to develop superior genetic variation among the existing promising cultivars and lines focusing on different qualitative and quantitative traits which would enhance the productivity and consumer’s attention.

Methodology:

Seeds were raised in the nursery and later transplanted to the main field 6 weeks after at a spacing of 2 m x 2 m with three replications at the experimental field of Pomology Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur. Some quantitative and qualitative data recorded in this study were taken at the flowering stage of the crop. Other data will be collected on the flowering and quantitative characters: plant height and girth, number of functional leaves, first bearing height, length and girth of fruit, cavity volume, cavity index, pulp thickness, TSS, number of fruits per tree, fruit weight and yield per tree. Physical observations of the following parameters will also be considered and recorded of the selected genotypes and their F₁ hybrids: color of male, female and hermaphrodite flowers, the ratio of sex types, and percentage of hybridization success. Since the data was incomplete that’s why the table was not shown in this study. Production of F₁ hybrids: Unopened flowers of identified female parents were covered with pollination bag 7 days before opening, later the bag was opened at 7^th day and removed the petals then the stigmatic surface was dusted with the pollen that had been collected from the donor male parent with the aid of a brush. Then the flower bud was re-covered with a pollination bag, tagged, and labeled. The hand-pollinated flower was then opened 5 days after in order to ensure that the stigmatic surface had degenerated so as not to receive external pollen thereby avoiding unknown pollination by pollinating agents.

Achievement/Findings:

Papaya continues to increase in importance as a fruit crop. Hybridization in field crops is the best way in developing pure and quality hybrid in plant breeding. The study will provide new hybrids which would attract the consumer's demand and attention.
