Abundance of Peach Fruit Fly, Bactrocera Zonata (saunders) in Mango Orchard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The abundance of male peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) was monitored from September 2014 to August 2015 in three mango orchards at Chapainawabganj, Natore and Dhaka, Bangladesh. The trap catches of male B. zonata in three locations showed a similar pattern during the study with a major peak in June. Dramatic decrease in fly population took place during the winter i.e., early December to the late February. The lowest population of male B. zonata was found in the month of January in all sampling sites and the values were 16.25±2.13, 17.00±2.40 and 11.25±1.93 flies/trap/month for Chapai, Natore and Dhaka, respectively. The abundance of fruit fly showed significant correlation with temperature and relative humidity. The result suggests that high humidity and high temperature are favorable for peach fruit fly.

Objectives:

An experiment was conducted to study the population fluctuation of male peach fruit fly in mango orchards of three selected districts of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was carried out in three different locations of Bangladesh viz., i. a mango orchard of Regional Horticulture Research Station (24°59’20”N 88°27’95”E), Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Chapainawabganj, ii. a mango orchard of Narayanpur village (24°37’86.4”N 89°22’20.4”E), Gurudaspur Upazila, Natore district and iii. A small mango orchard AERE campus (23°94’20.8”N 90°27’21.6”E), Savar, Dhaka. Four traps baited with methyl eugenol were hung on the trees about 1.8 m above the ground and maintained during September 2014 to August 2015. Traps were made of two litre empty plastic bottles, with two triangular lateral holes (approximately 25×30×30 mm) at mid height of the bottles. A lure plug with 2 g of lure (Scentry Biologicals, Billings, Montana, USA) and one half of a 25 × 90 mm strip containing 10% dichlorvos (2,2–dichlorovynil dimethyl phosphate) (Vaportape® II, Hercon Environmental, Emingsville, Pennsylvania, USA) were suspended from the trap’s ceiling with a hook made of tie wire. The dead flies were sorted out and counted at every 7 days interval. Monthly average temperature and relative humidity of three locations were collected from experimental record book of RHRS, Chapainawabganj and from the Meteorological Department, Agargaon, Dhaka 1207. Collected data were analyzed by using Minitab version 13 (ANOVA) and Microsoft Excel software (Correlation analysis). Monthly mean population of male peach fruit flies was separated by Tukey’s Test.

From the experimental results it may be concluded that during high rainfall, high temperature and relative humidity periods (June-August) farmers and researchers should pay extra attention to formulate a sustainable management technique against the peach fruit fly.
